Ultimate Guide to Defeating the Octopus Boss in Death Stranding 2

When it comes to Hideo Kojima’s games, you can expect a few signature elements, and one of them is certainly a boss adorned with tentacles. In Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, this tradition holds true as players encounter a formidable octopus machine in Episode 3: Drawbridge. This colossal creature represents a significant challenge for Sam—a noteworthy upgrade from previous encounters.
If you find yourself gearing up to take down Order 12, you’ve come to the right place for a comprehensive strategy. Let’s dive into our guide and prepare to conquer this tentacled beast!
Preparing for the Octopus Boss
After reaching the Musician, Sam’s next mission involves linking West Fort Knot to the chiral network, and as fate would have it, he must face a mandatory boss along the way. Before embarking on this challenge, it’s crucial to prepare effectively at the Musician’s terminal.
While your route to the boss is relatively straightforward, consider leaving heavy construction items such as ladders and PCCs behind. These can encumber Sam during the battle, reducing his agility and responsiveness at a critical moment.
Prioritize equipping a Battle Skeleton and fabricate two Machine Guns [MP] along with three Blood Bags. There’s no need for grenades or shotguns in this long-range strategy.
Additionally, ensure Sam’s health and stamina are at optimum levels before entering the fray. Use Blood Bags and drink from the Canteen to replenish his resources from recent deliveries.
Attack & Weakness Analysis
The Octopus Boss may initially seem overwhelming, thanks to its extensive tentacles designed to attack Sam relentlessly, restricting his movement options. However, targeting its weak points will make defeating it much easier.
This mechanical giant, shrouded in tar—a novel element in the Death Stranding universe—features two battle phases, albeit with some similarities.
In the first phase, the boss hovers menacingly, employing three tentacles to engage in attacks that exhibit its sheer size. Once you transition to the second phase, expect a more aggressive approach, where the octopus gets closer to the ground, executing swifter side assaults infused with variations—one being a charged strike with three tentacles that is telegraphed by its body shrinking before the attack.
Fortunately, its vulnerabilities are easily identifiable, with glowing red joints and a prominent engine on its back signaling where to focus your attacks.
Defeating the Giant BT
Despite its intimidating presence, there’s no need for panic. Our tactics here are reliable and effective.
During the first phase, prioritize staying mobile and always move in the opposite direction of its attacks. Recognizing its patterns by observing its tentacle movements will greatly help you evade successfully.
Maintain a safe distance rather than climbing nearby structures. Use your Machine Gun [MP] diligently to target the joints, focusing on one tentacle at a time until it is completely dismantled; this will gradually weaken the octopus machine.
As you progress into the second phase, exercise extra caution since its pace picks up significantly. Dodge (using aim + press “X”) at pivotal moments—remember, it shrinks before attacking, so keep an eye on its movements. Continue targeting the weak spots without wasting precious time.
Repeat this strategy until victory is yours. With accurate aim, your dual Machine Guns should suffice. If you find yourself low on ammunition, look for shadowy figures from other players in the tar for extra weaponry.
Rewards for Overcoming the Boss
Congratulations on your victory over the Octopus Boss! Unfortunately, the spoils of war are somewhat modest.
Your primary reward is the satisfaction of successfully connecting West Fort Knot to the chiral network, which unlocks the Floating Carrier Lv1, an indispensable piece of equipment as you continue your journey. Moreover, you will have contributed to making this post-apocalyptic world a tad safer.
As an additional bonus, you’ll gain 20 Memories for APAS Enhancements and earn points in “Combat”and “Bridge Link”that can boost Sam’s porter rating. If you achieve Rank S, you’ll also receive more than 900 likes from grateful players.
