Ultimate Guide to Defeating the Double Moss Mother Boss in Hollow Knight: Silksong

The Moss Mother marks the inaugural mandatory boss in Hollow Knight: Silksong, serving as an introductory challenge rather than a significant hurdle. Nevertheless, players may be unaware that they can engage in a more intense rematch with a “double”version of this boss later in the game, significantly amplifying the difficulty.
Once you’ve acquired the Needolin after overcoming the Widow in Bellhart, you can attempt this backtracking challenge. This rematch with the double Moss Mother awaits in a hidden subarea of Moss Grotto.
As the name implies, you’ll be confronting two Moss Mothers simultaneously, and this battle promises a much quicker and more aggressive pace. However, fear not; our comprehensive guide will equip you with the strategies necessary to tackle this “double trouble”effectively. Ready your Needle, and let’s dive in.
Locating the Double Moss Mother & Optimal Preparation
To initiate your quest, ensure that you’ve made sufficient story progress to unlock the Needolin. This ability is granted upon defeating the Widow boss in the depths of Bellhart.
The Needolin equips Hornet with the ability to use her Silk to produce ancient melodies, unlocking special gates found throughout Pharloom known as “Weaver Doors.” These doors are characterized by their dark appearance and cryptic inscriptions.
Prepare for some backtracking as you’ll need to revisit the game’s first biome, Moss Grotto. The quickest route is to fast travel to The Marrow and descend into the leftmost pit.
Before venturing forth, make sure you’ve unlocked and mastered the Swift Step ability in the Deep Docks area; this skill will be crucial for your strategy against these dual bosses.
Upon entering Moss Grotto, consult your map for a gate located at the far right side—this will be your target. Proceed there to find the Weaver Door marked (1 on the map above). Use your Needolin to whisk yourself inside (a small nod to a classic reference here).
Once inside Weavenest Atla, while not a major zone, it houses valuable items worth exploring, including the hidden boss you seek. Follow the pathway to the right until you reach a pair of slightly glowing lamps on a mysterious machine. After interacting with it, head back to find a large panel that will reveal the map of the area. Continue leftward to discover a glowing device on the floor—step on it to drop into a new section.
Proceed left again until you come across a Bench; take a moment to rest and make this your checkpoint. Dive into the nearby pond and swim left to uncover a secret passage leading to a larger area. Be cautious of common enemies that lurk here, especially the larger ones, but your main goal is the double Moss Mother boss, located at the corridor’s end on the left side (2 on the map above).
Strategies for Defeating the Double Moss Mother
Phase One: Surviving the First onslaught
The battle commences with the first Moss Mother appearing, exhibiting significantly more aggressive behavior than her earlier counterpart (perhaps seeking revenge?).She will repeatedly swing her pendulum while striking the ceiling to dislodge falling rocks and summon minions to harass you.
It’s important to note that the transition to the second phase is dictated by the Moss Mother, not your damage output; thus, this initial phase can be quite brief—potentially lasting only seconds!
To maximize your damage output in this phase, adopt an aggressive stance from the start, ensuring the boss cannot catch her breath. Center yourself in the arena to avoid being cornered, and leap to avoid her pendulum swings while attacking when she’s directly beneath you.
When she strikes the ceiling to drop debris, dash away quickly since dust particles will indicate where the rocks will fall. Be proactive about eliminating any summoned minions; though slow, they can chip away at your health if you’re too focused on dodging the Moss Mother.
Watch for her tell when she strikes the ceiling followed by a scream, signaling the imminent arrival of the second Moss Mother, which ramps up the challenge considerably.
Phase Two: Managing the Chaos
With both Moss Mothers in play, you’ll need to balance evasive maneuvers and offensive strikes amid the chaos. Maintain your position at the center of the arena to avoid being trapped during their pendulum attacks and take care to eliminate any minions that spawn, as they can create unforeseen difficulties during the fight.
Your best approach is to remain patient and allow the Moss Mothers to dictate the pace of combat. Only strike back when you’re certain the other is not in your attack’s trajectory. Prioritize survival over rapid completion.
When one Moss Mother is defeated, she will explode and emit a scream, which can distract you (I learned this the hard way).Move away from the remaining boss until the visual effects clear.
At this point, revert to your strategy from the first phase to confront the last remaining Moss Mother. Though this battle may seem daunting, with some luck and persistence, it can become manageable. In one of my attempts, I was given a lengthy first phase, allowing me to inflict substantial damage before the second Moss Mother appeared, ultimately making for a smoother fight.
Rewards for Conquering the Double Moss Mother
Post-victory, stay vigilant as two flying insects will invade the arena—surviving the intense boss battle only to fall to these common adversaries would be quite disheartening!
Dispatch them with jump attacks and take note of a glowing item on the ground: the Weavelight, a blue accessory that, per its description, enhances Silk regeneration speed.
This means you’ll enjoy an additional passive Silk, making it an invaluable asset during combat. Congratulations on your victory!
