Top Companions in Oblivion Remastered: How to Find the Best Followers

In the vast and immersive world of Oblivion Remastered, having a dedicated companion can make your adventures significantly easier. Whether you’re a valiant knight seeking a dependable squire or a cunning rogue in need of an ally to share the burdens of travel, a follower proves invaluable on your journey through Cyrodiil.
Carrying loot can quickly weigh you down, making it essential to have a trustworthy sidekick to help lighten the load. As you embark on quests and explore the landscape, having a companion to assist with the spoils can streamline your trips back to town for selling and trading.
Top Followers in Oblivion Remastered
The Adoring Fan
Instigating both laughter and frustration among players, the infamous Adoring Fan becomes your shadow after you complete all matches in the Imperial City Arena. While he may not excel in combat with his frail physique, he offers some utility as a pack mule, capable of carrying a few items and a torch to illuminate your path. Despite mixed feelings, no Oblivion experience is complete without encountering him—just be cautious about letting him too close!
Faction Quest Followers
A traditional pathway to acquiring a faithful companion in Oblivion Remastered is by ascending to leadership within one of the main factions. Successfully completing the quests for certain factions yields loyal followers:
- Dark Brotherhood Assassin – Complete the Dark Brotherhood storyline to gain a dedicated follower.
- Mages Guild Apprentice – Achieve leadership in the Mages Guild for a capable assistant.
- Knights of the Nine – Finish the faction quest, beginning with the Pilgrimage, to secure your own knightly follower.
Both the Dark Brotherhood and Mages Guild provide players with randomly generated companions, invaluable for combat support, loot collection, and enhancing your overall journey. Particularly beneficial for ranged characters, these followers can help draw enemy attention during encounters, especially at Oblivion Gates.
Erthor: The Loyal Mage
Interestingly, you don’t have to fully commit to faction quests to acquire a companion. Various missions introduce temporary allies, such as when you rescue them or clear dangerous locales. In some cases, these temporary companions will choose to remain by your side indefinitely if you avoid completing the quest.
Reflecting on my initial adventures through Oblivion back in 2006, I recall my time adventuring with Erthor, a lost mage from the Skingrad Mages Guild. I affectionately nicknamed him Bucky. Though he came unarmored and wielded only a basic iron dagger, his fearless charge into battle—complete with crackling spells—made him my most memorable ally.
To have your own version of Bucky, simply begin the quest to gather recommendations for the Mages Guild and head to Skingrad. Accept the mission to rescue Erthor from a nearby cave, and then choose not to return him to the Mages Guild. However, be mindful that he will depart as soon as you enter the Guild building, so ensure you gather all you need before bringing him along.
Frostspire Crag Atronachs
Nestled east of Bruma, the imposing Frostspire Crag offers not just a stunning backdrop but also a chance to obtain magical companions. This towering wizard’s sanctuary is among the free player-owned homes in Oblivion Remastered and provides access to its unique Atronach Altar.
To summon a powerful creature to accompany you, simply present three salts from any type of Atronach—be it flame, storm, or frost. This magical ally can serve as a formidable companion throughout your journey.
Castle Battlehorn Followers
Equally within your reach is another potential follower from Castle Battlehorn, another free house option in the game. If any of the Men-at-arms defending the castle survive their skirmish with bandits, you can recruit them to join your quest. Alternatively, you can upgrade your Castle through purchases in the Imperial City, which grants you access to a more formidable, named Man-at-arms.
Now that you have a reliable companion by your side, consider undertaking quests together. For reference, here’s a detailed map of all Daedric Artifact locations and associated quests in Oblivion Remastered, or you might want to embark on a mission to find all the Ayleid Statues scattered throughout Cyrodiil.
