Top Builds for The Hillbilly in Dead by Daylight (2025)

The Hillbilly, known formally as Max Thompson Jr., once stood out as one of the most formidable Killers in Dead by Daylight. However, subsequent nerfs and map adjustments have transformed him into a challenging character to master. His signature Chainsaw allows for rapid sprinting across vast distances and can down Survivors instantly. This makes him a high-pressure character when wielded correctly with optimized builds.
This guide aims to assist players in discovering the most beneficial perks for The Hillbilly that will leverage his unique Chainsaw abilities to their fullest potential.
Updated February 9, 2025 by Siddarth Narasimman: Recent adjustments to The Hillbilly’s kit, including modifications to his Chainsaw and various add-ons, have influenced his standing in the game meta following the introduction of the Overdrive mechanic. Despite these updates and some associated nerfs to Overdrive and several top-tier add-ons, The Hillbilly continues to be a captivating and lethal force in the game.
The Hillbilly: Best Non-Teachable Build (2025)
For players with limited access to additional DLC, focusing on base perks can significantly enhance The Hillbilly’s gameplay. His inherent perks, Tinkerer and Enduring, allow for better generator management and mitigate the effects of pallet stuns, respectively. Additionally, Hex: No One Escapes Death adds an element of danger for Survivors late in the game, while Bitter Murmur reveals their auras during crucial moments.
- Tinkerer (The Hillbilly) – Alerts the Killer when a generator hits 70% completion, granting Undetectable status for 16 seconds.
- Enduring (The Hillbilly) – Reduces pallet stun duration by 50%, allowing for quicker recovery and pursuit.
- Bitter Murmur (General Perk) – Reveals the auras of Survivors within a 16-meter radius of completed generators for 5 seconds, expanding to 10 seconds after the last generator is completed.
- Hex: No One Escapes Death (General Perk) – Causes Survivors to be Exposed after the final generator is done, providing a 4% Haste effect until the Hex Totem is cleansed.
The Hillbilly: Best Build with Teachable Perks (2025)
The Hillbilly thrives with perks that reveal the locations of multiple Survivors. Discordance is a particularly advantageous perk for him, enabling swift chases when multiple Survivors congregate on a generator. The high mobility of The Hillbilly also pairs well with Pop Goes the Weasel, which can disrupt generator progress after hooks.
Incorporating Bamboozle is often a requirement in the majority of builds, as it helps to counter Survivors’ advantage at windows. Lastly, No Way Out assures a powerful conclusion to trials, potentially turning a dire match into a victory during the endgame.
- Discordance (The Legion) – Highlights generators being worked on by two or more Survivors within 128 meters, providing a tactical advantage during chases.
- Bamboozle (The Clown) – Increases vault speed by 15%, and a successful vault blocks the window for 16 seconds, thwarting Survivor escape routes.
- Pop Goes the Weasel (The Clown) – After hooking a Survivor, the Killer can kick a generator within 45 seconds to remove 30% of its progress.
- No Way Out (The Trickster) – For each Survivor hooked, gain a token (maximum of four); once exit gates are powered, triggering a Survivor’s interaction with either gate will block it with a notification for a duration proportional to the number of tokens (up to 60 seconds).
The Hillbilly: Best Add-Ons
Greased Throttle
Greased Throttle is an efficient add-on that reduces the Chainsaw recovery time by 5% without any drawbacks. While it may not be game-changing, its effectiveness shines in conjunction with Lo Pro Chains during specific tactical situations.
The Thompsons’ Mix
The Thompsons’ Mix offers a 10% reduction in recovery time while The Hillbilly is not in Overdrive. Although combining it with Greased Throttle seems appealing, the resulting 15% reduced recovery time is often overshadowed by more potent add-ons available. Nonetheless, this combination can be useful alongside Lo Pro Chains or Iridescent Engravings.
Dad’s Boots and Spiked Boots
Both Dad’s Boots and Spiked Boots enhance The Hillbilly’s turn rate while wielding the Chainsaw, facilitating ambushes around tight loops. While running both add-ons may be excessive, utilizing one with either Lo Pro Chains or Iridescent Engravings can enhance The Hillbilly’s momentum for pursuing Survivors.
Lo Pro Chains
Despite recent nerfs, Lo Pro Chains remains The Hillbilly’s premier add-on due to its remarkable versatility. It allows the Chainsaw Sprint to continue after breaking a pallet or wall, effectively zoning in on Survivors without losing momentum. While it cannot down an already injured Survivor, it significantly enhances The Hillbilly’s ability to follow up with a basic attack.
Iridescent Engravings
The Iridescent Engravings add-on is another powerful asset for The Hillbilly, boosting his Chainsaw Sprint speed by 20% at the expense of a 12% longer charge time. This enhancement enables The Hillbilly to traverse significant distances rapidly, drastically limiting Survivors’ reaction time to his formidable speed.
