Although I might have logged more hours on my Nintendo 3DS, my fondness for the Nintendo DS remains undeniable. While not every game maximized the use of the stylus, there were still numerous titles that made it well worth your time.
Astonishingly, many hidden gems exist within the DS library, including exceptional adventures that have left a lasting impression on me.
From gripping FPS horror to turn-based RPGs, high-action escapades with Little Red Riding Hood, or delightful escapades alongside a band of Kirby characters, this curated list of rare DS games has something for everyone.
If you haven’t yet experienced these titles, prepare to add them to your gaming collection—you’ll want to express your gratitude later!
1. Leak: Hive
A Metroidvania Gem
As a long-time enthusiast of the Metroidvania genre, I believe Scurge: Hive deserves more recognition. This game, which centers on the bounty hunter Jenosa Arma, draws inspiration from the Metroid franchise yet adds its twist—her battle against an infection that creates a unique gameplay dynamic.
With its vibrant graphics and an engaging top-down isometric style, Scurge: Hive offers a brief but challenging adventure, featuring a truly unforgettable final boss encounter.
2. Dementia II
A Thrilling Horror Experience
Though the DS may not be renowned for its graphical capabilities, Renegade Kid achieved remarkable performance with the Dementium series. The first-person shooter mechanics enhance the horror experience, and the sequel, Dementium II, further elevates the tension with its unsettling narrative and impressive visuals.
The game’s compelling plot continually blurs the lines between reality and nightmare, leaving players questioning the protagonist’s sanity. The challenging controls add depth, particularly during intense encounters with various bosses.
3. Radiant History
Time Travel Done Right
During the DS era, Atlus consistently impressed with high-quality titles, and Radiant Historia stands out even among its stellar lineup. The game integrates time travel in a fashion that enhances its narrative, allowing players to manipulate events through the power of the White Chronicle.
With Stocke, your seemingly ordinary soldier as the protagonist, the gameplay shifts dynamically, drawing on grid-based strategies to engage in combat. My only regret is feeling that the story could have delved even deeper, which is perhaps addressed in its extended version, Perfect Chronology.
4. Pokémon Conquest
Strategy Meets Pokémon
Among the many DS titles I hope to see revived on the Switch, Pokémon Conquest holds a special place. This unique blend of tactical gameplay and Pokémon mechanics creates an experience that parallels Samurai Warriors in style.
Your Pokémon companions may be limited in attack options, but you can empower them uniquely in each battle. The replayability factor and the diverse cast of characters make for an engaging experience.
5. Kirby Mass Attack
Harnessing the Pink Power
My affection for Kirby has remained strong since childhood, and Kirby Mass Attack redefines how we engage with this beloved character. After a villain splits Kirby into ten copies, players must strategically guide this playful horde through puzzles and epic boss fights.
The game features challenging medals to collect, unlocking a plethora of additional content—truly an underrated treasure in the Kirby franchise.
6. Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ
A Unique Spin on a Classic
Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ is an utterly absurd title, blending traditional storytelling with over-the-top action. You play as a gun-toting heroine combating twisted versions of classic fairy tale foes.
Using the stylus to dodge threats on the top screen adds to the game’s unique mechanics, presenting a delightful challenge that is distinctively suited for the DS platform.
7. Okamiden
The Follow-Up Adventure
After the success of Okami, a sequel was inevitable: Okamiden delivers a charming experience despite the limitations of the DS hardware.
Featuring Chibiterasu, the child of the goddess Amaterasu, players employ a stylus-controlled brush mechanic to navigate battles and puzzles, cleverly enhancing gameplay. It’s a delightful evolution of the original’s mechanics.
8. Solatorobo: Red the Hunter
An Adventure in Steampunk
In a landscape crowded with steampunk narratives, Solatorobo: Red the Hunter stands out with its enchanting world inhabited by cat-like Felineko and dog-like Caninu creatures, coupled with steampunk technology.
Players navigate a compelling narrative while alternating between their mech suit’s powers and those of Red, tackling challenges and uncovering the secrets of their environment.
9. Retro Game Challenge
Channeling Retro Fun
My encounter with Retro Game Challenge at a now-defunct store called FuncoLand was serendipitous.Trapped in a simulation by Arino, players must complete various gaming challenges as they attempt to escape this retro-infused world.
The diverse gameplay—ranging from platformers to classic RPGs—provides a delightful twist, bringing back memories of simpler gaming days and begging for sequels Stateside.
10. Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier
An Unlikely Hidden Treasure
Platform
Nintendo DS
Publisher
BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment, Atlus
Genre
ARPG, TRPG, beat ’em up
Release Date
May 29, 2008
Oddly enough, I came across Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier through my regular IGN reading, despite never having played its predecessor series. The captivating art style initially caught my eye, but it was the strategic combat and signature humor that kept me engaged.
Fanservice can be a double-edged sword, yet when executed effectively, it can transport players into a delightfully ridiculous adventure—this title does just that. Even though players in North America didn’t receive the subsequent installment, the characters Haken and Kaguya have made appearances in other Bandai Namco franchises, adding to their charm.
Even if it’s a niche title, Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier is a must-try for those seeking a whimsical gaming experience.
