Exciting Developments in The Outer Worlds 2 Revealed by Obsidian Entertainment
In a recent video release as part of IGN’s April spotlight, Obsidian Entertainment shared captivating insights into the anticipated sequel, The Outer Worlds 2. One of the standout enhancements highlighted is the promise of “much more expansive worlds, ” addressing a common critique of the original game, which some players felt lacked sufficient space for exploration. Gamers can look forward to a richer environment, filled with engaging narratives and a variety of collectibles to discover.
Expanding Horizons with Unreal Engine 5
Art Director Daniel Alpert elaborated on these advancements, stating:
“We’re definitely going more expansive than the first game. In the first game, we were very confined to smaller hubs and overland areas. Now that we’re utilizing Unreal Engine 5, we can have way more expansive worlds. From point A to point B, there is a much larger territory that we can cover, and in between those areas, we have lots of little POIs (points of interest) that we can explore.”
This shift to Unreal Engine 5 is pivotal, as it facilitates a broader geographical scope in gameplay, which aligns with player feedback for larger, more diverse terrains. With this new technology, each transition between locations is enriched with various points of interest that encourage players to delve deeper into the game world.
Prioritizing Player Experience and Character Specialization
According to Game Director Brandon Adler, the development team aimed to cater to player desires for expansive areas right from the project’s inception:
“One of the very first things that we were targeting when we started The Outer Worlds 2 was to make these big, large, expansive areas. It’s what players told us that they wanted the most. Working with Daniel and the other directors, we sat down and came up with a plan to how we were going to go do that. We made sure that we had big open sightlines and that we spent a lot of time and effort on making really cool-looking points of interest at a distance to really draw people.”
The team is dedicated to creating visually appealing and engaging landscapes that captivate players and induce exploration off the main paths. Emphasizing the need for rich and enjoyable content at each destination ensures that players will have rewarding experiences waiting as they explore.
Revamping RPG Mechanics for Greater Impact
In addition to expansive world-building, IGN also conducted an interview discussing key modifications to the role-playing game (RPG) formula in The Outer Worlds 2. The developers are working towards eliminating the issue of character versatility by making choices more consequential. This means that players will no longer have an all-encompassing skill set by the end of the game, thereby enhancing personal experiences.
“We would often see characters good at everything, which by the end of the game minimized your personal experience with your character. We wanted to focus on making each individual level-up and investment really important.”
Lead systems designer Kyle Koenig emphasizes that with the removal of respec options, players can cultivate a unique character journey, enhancing the overall RPG experience.
Introducing a Full-Fledged Stealth System
As part of ongoing updates, it was also revealed that a comprehensive stealth system will be integrated into the gameplay of The Outer Worlds 2. This feature, along with many more details, will be elaborated upon during the dedicated showcase following the Xbox Games Showcase on June 8.
Players can anticipate the launch of The Outer Worlds 2 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X, promising an enriched, immersive RPG experience that prioritizes player choice and exploration.
