  • A prominent insider suggests that Sony is contemplating a PlayStation Showcase event in the summer of 2025.
  • Since the last PlayStation Showcase in May 2023, Sony has focused exclusively on its State of Play livestreams.
  • Anticipated reveals at the potential 2025 Showcase could include gameplay footage from titles such as Wolverine, Ghost of Yotei, and Saros, along with updates on other major first-party releases.

According to credible industry sources, Sony is currently deliberating whether to host a PlayStation Showcase this summer. The last event of this kind took place in May 2023, after which the company shifted back to the State of Play format for its livestreams.

The PlayStation Showcase format was introduced prior to the PS5 launch in 2020. It is designed to showcase more extensive announcements compared to the State of Play, typically unveiling a substantial number of first-party titles. The inaugural Showcase in June 2020 revealed the PS5 console itself, along with significant games including Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and the Demon’s Souls remake. Since then, further Showcases took place in September 2020, September 2021, and most recently in May 2023.

The May 2023 presentation received mixed reactions from fans, partly due to its focus on live-service games. This shift in content strategy may explain the lack of subsequent showcases. However, the possibility of reviving the Showcase format this year has sparked intrigue. Renowned insider Jeff Grubb mentioned in a recent episode of Game Mess that Sony is considering a summer 2025 PlayStation Showcase. The choice is reportedly between a traditional State of Play and the more ambitious Showcase, suggesting that a return to the latter may be promising.

Potential Highlights at the 2025 PlayStation Showcase

Grubb hints at exciting announcements potentially on the horizon for this summer showcase, which could serve as a platform to gradually build anticipation for the upcoming year, 2026. Several PlayStation studios have kept their projects under wraps for some time, and with three years elapsed, it might be the right moment for them to share updates. Notably, Insomniac Games’ Wolverine, first glimpsed in a CGI trailer during the 2021 PlayStation Showcase, is expected to finally showcase gameplay and possibly a release window.

Another title generating significant buzz is Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yotei, slated for a 2025 release, which could also be highlighted at this event. Additionally, Sony may use this opportunity to unveil new information about various first-party projects, including Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, a new IP from Santa Monica Studio, and Guerrilla Games’ upcoming Horizon co-op game. Furthermore, Housemarque’s newly announced game Saros might also appear, following recent teasers from director Gregory Louden during the February State of Play.
