Stardew Valley Guide: Tips for Obtaining Blue Chickens

For avid players of Stardew Valley, the introduction of chickens is a game-changer in your early farming ventures. These delightful birds don’t only supply eggs of various sizes but also play a significant role in cooking and crafting mayonnaise, which can be sold for a considerable profit. Plus, they are essential for completing various Community Centre Bundles!
With the highly anticipated 1.6 update, players can also select the Meadowlands farm layout, which conveniently starts with a coop and 2 free chicks. Furthermore, the new blue grass will enhance the affection levels of your chickens at an impressive pace.
If you’re seeking a unique addition to your farm beyond the standard white and brown chickens, consider raising a stylish blue variant. While their characteristics don’t differ, their vibrant appearance is a delightful way to elevate your farming aesthetic.
Constructing a Chicken Coop
To house your blue chickens, you’ll first need to build a coop. This can be done affordably early in the game (or by simply selecting the Meadowlands farm layout).
Head over to Robin’s carpentry shop with the following materials:
- 300
- 100
- 4000g
While it may appear pricey at first, rest assured that you will quickly earn back your investment through egg sales or by transforming them into gourmet products.
Your initial coop can accommodate 4 chickens, but upgrades later on will allow for more features, including additional animals, incubators, and auto-feeders.
Establishing Friendship with Shane
Once your coop is established, focus on building friendship with Shane. This is crucial to unlock the sale of blue chickens, which is tied to his 8-heart event. Begin the friendship as soon as possible because Shane’s birthday falls on the 20th of Spring.
To quickly boost your friendship, consider giving Shane the following gifts:
Loved Gift
Location
Brew in a keg from wheat or purchase from Gus for 400g
Plant Pepper seeds during Summer
Cook using Hot Pepper and cheese, or buy from Gus or Krobus through their rotating stock.
Cook with tomato, wheat flour, and cheese or purchase from Gus for 600g.
Universal Loved Gifts
Items like pearl and prismatic shard are universally loved, but they may not be worth giving due to their rarity compared to less expensive options.
Avoid giving Shane Quartz or Pickles, as these gifts will not be well-received.
To maximize your friendship efficiently, gifting Hot Peppers with enhanced quality on Shane’s birthday offers the quickest path. Using Gold/Iridium quality Hot Peppers can dramatically increase your friendship level.
Shane can often be found working at Joja Mart or in the Saloon during the evenings.
Navigating Shane’s Heart Events
Before you can acquire blue chickens, it’s essential to complete a series of heart events with Shane. If these events are not fulfilled, the blue chicken will remain inaccessible to you.
Moreover, witnessing Shane’s recovery journey adds depth to your gameplay experience, as his narrative is one of the more profound tales within Stardew Valley.
2 Heart Event
Upon reaching 2 hearts, you can meet Shane after 8 PM in Cindersap Forest. Enjoy a beer together as he shares insights about his life, leading to a slightly tipsy journey home in the dark.
4 Heart Event
This event can be triggered anytime after reaching 4 hearts by entering Shane’s farmhouse. This scenario displays Shane inebriated on his bedroom floor, highlighting the impact of his issues on himself and others around him.
6 Heart Event
Activate this event by entering Cindersap Forest between 8 AM and 9 PM, but only during rain. You’ll find Shane contemplating life at the edge of a cliff, and will need to persuade him of its value. The first dialogue option won’t impact your friendship level, but following the event, Shane will receive assistance from Harvey at the hospital.
The next day, when Shane visits you, your choice of dialogue will affect your friendship. Opt for either “I was glad I was there to help” or “I’m just happy you’re still here” to maintain your relationship. The other response will create tension and harm your link with him—so be cautious!
7 Heart Event Part 1 & 2
After continuously nurturing your friendship, you can enter Marnie’s Ranch, where Shane reveals he has stopped drinking and presents a gift for Jas.
Next, head to Pelican Town between 10 AM and 4 PM on a sunny day. Ensure you have at least 2 hearts of friendship with both Clint and Emily, as they feature in this cutscene. Watch as Shane explores a new pastime in filmmaking, directing a Joja promotion commercial where you’ll play a minor role.
8 Heart Event
Finally, upon completing all prior events, you can visit the ranch to witness the last cutscene. Shane will be rejoicing with blue chickens—the very creatures you have been yearning for. He expresses his intention to share his chicken-raising knowledge with Jas, marking the closure of this heartfelt journey. While other events exist beyond this, this is your goal for acquiring blue chickens.
How to Acquire the Blue Chicken
With the successful completion of Shane’s events, every time you hatch an egg—be it white or brown—you will have a 25% chance, or 1 in 4 eggs, of obtaining a blue chicken.
If you prefer a swifter solution, you can simply purchase one from Marnie at the regular price. Engage in the dialogue until you reach the chicken placement option and check the status of your potential chicken. If it’s not blue, you can repeat the dialogue until you achieve the desired outcome. With patience and persistence, you will ultimately fill your farm with charming blue chickens—a remarkable sight to behold!
