Randy Pitchford Confirms Borderlands 4 Will Not Be Deeply Discounted or Available on Subscription Services for Over Five Years

Insights on Borderlands 4 Pricing and Future Developments
Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Software, has recently shared that players can expect a significant delay before Borderlands 4 sees deep discounts or makes its way onto subscription services such as Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus. In a conversation on X, he reflected on the substantial price drop of the third installment during the Steam Summer Sale 2025, which was discounted by an impressive 95% from its original MSRP. Pitchford pointed out that it took five years for Borderlands 3 to reach this price point and become available through various subscription platforms.
To set clearer expectations regarding the forthcoming game, Pitchford noted that Borderlands 4 will take even longer to achieve similar pricing milestones. Although he later amended his remarks to clarify that pricing decisions are not solely in his control, his comments offer insight into the anticipated timeline for long-term pricing drops. It will be interesting to observe how this information unfolds over time.
Borderlands 4: A New Evolution in the Franchise
The extended timeline for pricing drops is not the only significant distinction between Borderlands 4 and its predecessor. Executive Producer Chris Brock has indicated that this latest installment will represent a notable evolution for the franchise, diverging from the familiarity that characterized Borderlands 3, which aimed to recapture the essence of the series after a seven-year hiatus. Key enhancements, such as improved traversal capabilities and exploration mechanics, are designed to elevate the gameplay experience and differentiate Borderlands 4 from earlier titles.
Release Date and Platform Availability
Borderlands 4 is set to launch on September 12, 2023, and will be available on multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. Additionally, a version for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 will be released later, expanding the accessibility of the game to a broader audience.
As the gaming community anticipates the arrival of Borderlands 4, it will be crucial to monitor both pricing trends and gameplay innovations that could shape the franchise’s future.
