Ubisoft’s New Battle Royale Project: What We Know So Far

Recent insights from Insider-Gaming indicate that Ubisoft is venturing into another live service game, even as it prepares to sunset its previous title, XDefiant, by June 2025.

Project “Scout”: Aiming for the Battle Royale Market

According to sources cited in the report, Ubisoft’s new endeavor is a battle royale game currently referred to by the codename “Scout.”The strategic intention is to tap into what the company perceives as an opening in the market, particularly driven by a decrease in player engagement with Apex Legends. As one insider indicated, “I think the goal is to capitalize on the player count of Apex dropping and them [Ubisoft higher-ups] thinking there’s room in the market for another hero Battle Royale.”

The Live Service Landscape: Ubisoft’s Mixed Record

This isn’t Ubisoft’s first attempt at launching a live service title. Rainbow Six Siege stands out as a major success; however, it’s a paid model rather than a free-to-play game. When evaluating Ubisoft’s history with free-to-play titles, the results are more mixed. Right now, Brawlhalla frequently comes up as their most successful free-to-play offering, while the company also holds the record for the longest-running free-to-play game with the PC-only MMO, Growtopia.

Current Free-to-Play Offerings

Many of Ubisoft’s recent titles, including Battle Core Arena, Rocksmith+, Roller Champions, Trackmania, and Rabbids Coding, can be found among their free-to-play games on Ubisoft’s official website. Despite the presence of these titles, Ubisoft seems reticent to publicly celebrate any substantial successes they’ve enjoyed in this genre.

The Uncertain Fate of Scout

Following the disbanding of XDefiant and the similarly short-lived Hyper Scape, it remains uncertain whether Project Scout can chart a different course. With battle royales no longer commanding the same fresh excitement they once did in the free-to-play arena, the competition remains fierce. Dominant titles like Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, and PUBG continue to hold substantial sway over the market.

The Future of Ubisoft’s Battle Royale

Looking back, one could argue that XDefiant had the potential to break new ground in the multiplayer space with its nostalgic gameplay. If Ubisoft had provided more extensive support for XDefiant throughout its first year, it may have seen a rise in players after an initial launch dip. As we await further details about Project Scout, it will be interesting to see if Ubisoft is prepared to offer the same level of commitment to this new venture.
