Rumor: Sony Has Scrapped a PlayStation Game Port for PC

Key Developments in Gran Turismo 7 and Demon’s Souls PC Ports

Recent reports indicate that the anticipated Gran Turismo 7 PC port has been scrapped, raising questions about Sony’s ongoing commitment to porting PlayStation titles to PC. This development comes on the heels of a significant focus on expanding their game catalog across platforms.

Launched in early March 2022 for both PS4 and PS5, Gran Turismo 7 was a part of Sony’s venture into PC gaming, which had seen successful releases of titles like Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone, and God of War. However, Gran Turismo 7 has not been formally acknowledged as being developed for the PC platform.

Evidence of a planned PC version emerged when an IconEra user, Bryank75, disclosed that insiders had indicated work on the project was indeed underway, but ultimately it was put on hold. The reasons for this cancellation remain unclear, and details surrounding when Sony made the decision to halt development are still unknown.

Demon’s Souls PC Port Status: No Current Developments

In a follow-up discussion on IconEra, Bryank75 addressed inquiries about a potential PC adaptation of the Demon’s Souls remake, asserting that there are no ongoing development plans for this title. They speculated that a PC version of the 2020 game could be years away from realization.

The possibility of Gran Turismo 7 not making its way to PC may surprise some fans, considering that expanding Polyphony Digital’s racing franchise to more platforms appeared advantageous for Sony’s live-service strategy. However, it’s worth noting that since 2022, Sony has reportedly shelved more than ten Games as a Service (GaaS) projects. This trend suggests a possible reevaluation of their live-service approach, especially following the retirement of former CEO Jim Ryan in March 2024. Just a month earlier, PlayStation Chairman Hiroki Totoki had promised more aggressive initiatives regarding PC ports.

Since his statement, Sony has made strides in releasing PC versions of several major titles, including Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima, LEGO Horizon Adventures, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. While the cancellation of the Gran Turismo 7 PC port could indicate a shift in their strategy, it’s unclear how this will influence their overall approach to PC gaming.

The competitive landscape has changed, particularly with Microsoft shifting its focus towards multi-platform publishing to the detriment of Xbox hardware. This strategic pivot positions Sony uniquely in the market, allowing it to capitalize on offering access to both PlayStation and Xbox game ecosystems, particularly with day-one releases. However, this does not necessarily imply a reduction in the importance of PlayStation titles being released on PC platforms.
