PlayStation 5 Surpasses PS4 in Monthly Active Users

In a significant development revealed during Sony’s annual investors presentation, the company announced that as of March 31, 2025, the number of monthly active users on the PlayStation 5 (PS5) has exceeded that of the PlayStation 4 (PS4) for the first time in this console generation. This milestone indicates a positive shift, as more gamers transition to the latest generation of hardware.

Reflecting on the previous year, during May 2024’s presentation, Sony disclosed that the gaming community was evenly split, with 50% of players using PS4 and 50% on PS5. However, this trend has changed over the last year, suggesting that a growing number of players are making the switch to the current generation.

With the latest figures, PlayStation now boasts 124 million monthly active users, a notable increase from the 123 million reported in 2023, already a remarkable achievement for the company.

CEO Highlights Engagement and Growth

In his address, Hideaki Nishino, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, expressed enthusiasm about the platform’s growth. He stated, “Our platform is stronger than ever. We continue to attract more players, and we now have over 124 million monthly active users. Through the wide range of content and services we provide, these players are more engaged than ever, which has resulted in record-high gameplay hours. Our platform is also more accessible than ever. The PlayStation 5 offers the best way for players to experience our content, and as such, this player base has continued to grow.”

Nishino further emphasized the increasing engagement levels, noting that players are spending more on content and services compared to previous generations. Nonetheless, he maintains a commitment to PS4 users, stating, “The PlayStation 4 remains an important access point for existing players to experience our content and services, and we remain committed to serving them.”

Commitment to Multiplatform Strategy

As the industry evolved leading up to the PS5’s launch, there was significant dialogue surrounding Sony’s belief in gaming generations. Initially, the expectation was set that many upcoming titles would be exclusive to the PS5. However, the reality showcased that several major releases were still being made available on PS4. As the market landscape shifts, it is clear that the PS4 continues to represent a substantial portion of PlayStation’s player base.

During the same presentation, Sony reaffirmed its dedication to a multiplatform strategy for the foreseeable future, ensuring that all players, regardless of their console choice, can continue to enjoy the ecosystem’s offerings.
