PlayStation Classics Collection to Benefit FromSoftware Enthusiasts Significantly
The PlayStation 5 has drawn criticism for its limited backwards compatibility features. Unlike the Xbox Series X/S, which offers an extensive library of titles from the original Xbox and Xbox 360, the PS5 only supports a selection of PS4 games natively. To address this drawback, Sony has embarked on a mission to revitalize classic gaming by introducing emulated versions of numerous beloved titles from the PS1, PS2, and PSP eras through its PlayStation Plus Premium subscription service. Over the past few years, this service has expanded to include nearly 500 retro games, offering fans a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
Recently, Sony enriched the PlayStation Plus Premium’s Classics Catalog with several high-profile additions. In January, subscribers welcomed the return of the PS1 action-adventure classic, Medievil 2, alongside the PS2’s Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings, a game based on the popular film franchise. This month, the critically lauded PSP rhythm game, Patapon 3, is set to join the lineup, reinforcing Sony’s commitment to delivering classic gaming experiences to its subscribers. With more exciting releases on the horizon, PlayStation Plus Premium continues to be a vital hub for gamers seeking to relive the past.
Exciting Additions: Armored Core Series Coming to PS Plus Premium
At the latest PlayStation State of Play event, exciting news broke as Sony revealed the addition of three iconic titles from the Armored Core franchise to PlayStation Plus Premium. Developed by the renowned FromSoftware, known for its acclaimed Dark Souls and Elden Ring series, these titles include Armored Core (1997), Armored Core: Project Phantasma, and Armored Core: Master of Arena. While these games debuted on the original PlayStation, their modern availability has been limited, making this announcement particularly significant for fans of the series.
Classic Titles Returning: AC 1, AC: Project Phantasma, and AC: Masters of Arena
The first installment of Armored Core debuted in July 1997, shortly after the PlayStation 1 launched. This innovative third-person mecha game marked a breakthrough for FromSoftware, which until then had focused mainly on the niche King’s Field series. Although Armored Core may seem somewhat outdated by contemporary standards, it received positive reviews for its in-depth mech customization options and multiplayer functionality, which were groundbreaking at the time.
Following closely, Armored Core: Project Phantasma was released in December 1997, just months after its predecessor. Serving as a standalone expansion, it introduced new weaponry and customization features, along with an optional arena mode that allowed players to face off in combat scenarios, enhancing its replayability.
The saga continued with Armored Core: Master of Arena, launched in 1999, further emphasizing the arena battles introduced in Project Phantasma. Players engage in mech combat within various arenas to progress through the story and unlock new weapons. This title marked the last of the original Armored Core trilogy on the PS1, with later entries transitioning to the PS2. With the resurgence of interest in these classic titles on PlayStation Plus, there is hope that Sony and FromSoftware may consider reintroducing additional titles from the Armored Core series in the future, especially from the PS2 era.
