Significant Fixes in Latest PlayStation 5 System Update

Yesterday, Sony rolled out an essential system software update for the PlayStation 5, addressing a critical issue along with several minor improvements. This update is considered one of the most significant fixes in recent times.

The PlayStation 5 subreddit initially reported the changes, which were subsequently validated by Sony in a statement to Digital Foundry. This update specifically rectified a known Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) problem that previously led to stuttering during gameplay, particularly in titles such as The Last of Us Part I and II, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, and Diablo IV.

Impact on Gaming Experience

The stuttering issue not only affected games running at 120 Hz with unlocked frame rates but also those that utilized the VRR feature within the 48Hz to 60Hz range. Noteworthy is the improvement seen in Elden Ring, which no longer experiences the previously persistent stutter after prolonged gameplay sessions.

Sony PR contacted me yesterday to confirm that – as already detected by some – the latest PlayStation firmware resolves the VRR hiccup issue. When I find a spare moment, I’ll test it out.
