Enhancements in Black Myth: Wukong for PlayStation 5 Pro

The implementation of the PSSR upscaler in Black Myth: Wukong on PlayStation 5 Pro has received significant praise, showcasing one of the most effective applications of this technology in an Unreal Engine 5 game to date. This was revealed through a thorough examination by Digital Foundry.

Quality Mode Improvements

The latest patch has introduced noteworthy enhancements in the Quality Mode of the game. With PSSR support now upscaling a native resolution of approximately 1296p to 4K, players can expect sharper visuals and a more refined gaming experience. Notably, issues like the pixelation seen in character hair during encounters, such as the first boss fight, have been greatly reduced. Comparatively, the PSSR performance surpasses that of AMD FSR, particularly in lighting consistency, which seems markedly more stable than in other Unreal Engine 5 titles, including the Silent Hill 2 remake. This indicates that PSSR’s performance is generally robust, with only minor artifacts occurring as seen in similar games.

Balance Mode Adjustments

The game also features a Balance Mode, which similarly upscales the internal resolution from 1296p to 4K using PSSR. However, this mode presents some distinct visual differences such as reduced texture quality and modifications to Lumen lighting. While Quality Mode operates at 30 FPS, Balance Mode delivers a smoother experience with frame rates typically reaching 40 FPS at a 120 Hz output, allowing for improved frame pacing and responsiveness. On the other hand, Performance Mode has seen minimal changes, maintaining a steady 60 FPS at a resolution of 1080p through frame generation techniques.

Future Expectations for PSSR Technology

The strong PSSR implementation in Black Myth: Wukong offers promising potential, given that previous utilizations of AI-driven upscalers have produced varying results. Expectations are high for developers to continue refining this technology, striving to match or even exceed the benchmarks set by NVIDIA DLSS, which remains the leading upscaler in the industry.
