PlayStation 5 Sales in Japan exceed 7 Million Units

PlayStation 5 Achieves Significant Sales Milestone in Japan
As reported by Gematsu, the PlayStation 5 has officially surpassed 7 million units sold in Japan as of September 7, 2025. This achievement follows the console’s recent milestone of 80.3 million units shipped globally last month, highlighting the robust demand for the PS5 series.
Sales Breakdown and Current Standing
According to the latest Famitsu sales metrics, an impressive 7, 009, 937 units of the PlayStation 5, which includes both the standard and Pro versions, have found their way into Japanese households. In contrast, the Xbox Series X/S lineup has sold around 682, 927 units, demonstrating a significant gap in market preference.
Comparative Performance: PS5 vs. PS4
Currently, the PlayStation 5 is making notable strides in catching up with the PlayStation 4, which has lifetime sales of approximately 7, 929, 886 units in Japan. While this indicates a strong uptake of the new console, it also underscores the lasting impact and presence that the PS4 has had in the region.
Market Challenges
Despite the positive sales figures, the PS5 continues to face challenges in terms of pricing. Recent global price hikes may hinder its sales momentum, potentially affecting its ability to outpace its predecessor.
The Dominance of Nintendo
In the broader spectrum of the Japanese console market, PlayStation still trails behind Nintendo. The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 has already achieved estimated sales of 1, 980, 483 units, while the current Nintendo Switch has dominated with approximately 35, 969, 655 units sold since its release in 2017. This continued success illustrates the fierce competition in the gaming console landscape.
