Key Departures at PlatinumGames Raise Concerns

  • Recent exits of prominent directors have left fans concerned about the future of PlatinumGames.
  • In 2023, studio co-founder and Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya ended his nearly two-decade-long association with PlatinumGames.
  • Other notable directors, including those behind Bayonetta Origins, Astral Chain, and Metal Gear Rising, have also reportedly departed.

In a notable turn of events, several key directors have seemingly left PlatinumGames, sparking concerns among fans regarding the studio’s trajectory. Over the last few years, PlatinumGames has witnessed a significant brain drain, with many respected developers seeking new opportunities. The most prominent exit was that of Hideki Kamiya, co-founder and creator of the iconic Bayonetta franchise, who departed in 2023 after close to 20 years, citing a divergence in creative direction with the studio.

Following Kamiya’s departure, speculation mounted regarding additional exits. Notable figures like Abebe Tinari, who directed Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon; Takahisa Taura, director of Astral Chain; Kenji Saito, known for his work on Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance; and Masaki Yamanaka, who contributed to Anarchy Reigns, were rumored to be leaving. Tinari even confirmed his exit, revealing that he has moved out of Japan, heightening concerns over the studio’s stability.

Recent developments reinforce these concerns, particularly through a revealing video shared on Hideki Kamiya’s YouTube channel. As reported by VGC, the video featured what Kamiya called a “former PlatinumGames directors’ drinking party, ” showcasing a gathering of himself, Tinari, Taura, Saito, Yamanaka, and Yusuke Miyata, director of Bayonetta 3. This gathering raises questions about future collaborations as PlatinumGames has yet to officially comment on these notable exits.

In 2024, Hideki Kamiya announced the formation of Clovers Inc., a revival of the former Clover Studios, and is currently developing a sequel to Okami. He has indicated that several former PlatinumGames team members have joined him, including Kento Koyama, another co-founder and former Project GG designer. A recent group photo also hints at the involvement of notable alumni, like Kunihiko Tsuda, cinematics director for Bayonetta and Astral Chain, and lead animator Hirokazu Takeuchi from Metal Gear Rising. However, their exact roles at Clovers have yet to be confirmed.

In the meantime, PlatinumGames is collaborating with Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja on the upcoming Ninja Gaiden 4, scheduled for release this fall. However, the status of Hideki Kamiya’s Project GG remains uncertain following his departure, particularly after its recent removal from PlatinumGames’ website and a lack of updates, leading many fans to speculate about its possible cancellation. Additionally, Takahisa Taura’s recent social media activity hints at the potential formation of his own studio based in Tokyo.
