Hidenari Ugaki Discusses Majima’s Role in Upcoming Games

In a recent interview, Hidenari Ugaki, the acclaimed voice actor for Majima Goro in the Like a Dragon series (formerly known as Yakuza), shared insights about his upcoming role in Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. Ugaki also touched on the intriguing possibility of a dedicated game focused solely on Majima, emphasizing the character’s enduring popularity.

Insight into Majima’s Enduring Appeal

During the interview, Ugaki discussed his experiences surrounding the character’s recent appearances. After playing Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, he was approached by Kenji Matsuda, who noted Majima’s surprising prevalence in fan discussions despite his minimal presence in those titles. This highlights the unique connection fans maintain with the character.

An Interesting Proposition

Ugaki reminisced about a conversation with series writer and producer, Yokoyama, at the Tokyo Game Show two years ago.“What if we created a game centered on Majima, perhaps titled Hannya ga Gotoku?”Ugaki proposed. Surprisingly, Yokoyama dismissed the idea, stating, “That’s not going to happen.” Yet, the progress toward Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii indicates that Majima’s journey continues.

..At Tokyo Game Show, we discussed the future of the series with Yokoyama. During that time I said, “What if we made a Hannya ga Gotoku with Majima as the main character” to which he [Yokoyama] said “That’s not going to happen.” Despite that, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii was produced, and the 20th anniversary logo for the series wasn’t drawn with a dragon, but with a hannya. I feel happy that I was able to play Majima again. And I would like to thank each and every fan that has shown their support.

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is poised to be the latest installment in the “Gaiden”series. The previous title, Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, revolved around Kazuma Kiryu, offering fans a nostalgic look at the former protagonist after the events of Yakuza: Like a Dragon. In contrast, this new entry follows the thrilling escapades of Majima Goro, taking place after Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.

Release Information

This exciting title is set to launch on February 21, 2025, across multiple platforms, including PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC through Steam. In addition, a themed album titled Captain Majima – EP will premiere in Japan on February 7, 2025. The anticipation surrounding these releases highlights an evolving narrative landscape in the popular series.
