Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Deliberately Portrays Guns as Negative

Overview
- The introduction of handgonnes in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is a deliberate design choice.
- These firearms mirror the historical artillery of 15th-century Bohemia, featuring slow reload times and poor accuracy.
- With a positive reception, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is already being discussed as a potential contender for 2025’s Game of the Year.
Warhorse Studios, the creative force behind the medieval RPG Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, has confirmed that its newly introduced “handgonne”firearms are intentionally designed to be ineffective. The game has launched to enthusiastic reviews, with many players considering it a frontrunner for the 2025 Game of the Year award.
Both Kingdom Come: Deliverance and its sequel stand out for their intricate attention to historical detail. Game mechanics reflect authenticity—food spoils if left uneaten, armor accumulates dirt that must be cleaned, and swords need regular sharpening to ensure they are battle-ready. This commitment to realism extends to the new handgonnes, which have sacrificed usability for authenticity, leading many users to discover that these weapons are hardly practical in battle.
The Design Philosophy Behind the Handgonnes
Warhorse Studios has crafted these handgonnes with the intention of making them less viable in combat. Their slow reload times and significant inaccuracies are reflective of the technological limitations faced during the 15th-century in Bohemia. In an interview with PC Gamer, PR Manager Tobias Stolz-Zwilling stated that the design team embraced the idea of the handgonne as a “meme weapon.”He remarked, “We knew it would be a meme weapon, but we were cool with it, ”highlighting their playful yet educated approach to game design.
The attention to historical nuance is evident in how handgonnes are presented—they are cumbersome and intended for stealth tactics rather than direct confrontation. Though they may not shine in the heat of battle, players who wish to utilize these weapons can consider the Thunderous Blast perk. This perk won’t enhance accuracy or reload speed, but it can inflict combat debuffs and morale hits to nearby enemies following the first shot, providing a strategic edge.
Despite the game’s successful debut, players can anticipate upcoming updates and patches for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. However, given the intentional design behind the handgonnes’ inadequacy, players should not expect any changes that might improve their functionality anytime soon.
