Jagex Confirms Layoffs and Delays RuneScape Project Zanaris Development

Jagex Announces Layoffs and Breaks ‘Project Zanaris’
Jagex, the well-known British game developer, has recently made headlines due to a round of layoffs, as officially confirmed by their Community Manager, JagexHooli. This decision is part of an ongoing company restructure aimed at reallocating resources toward enhancing their flagship RuneScape franchise and expanding community engagement.
Details on the Layoffs
According to JagexHooli’s statement on Reddit, the layoffs primarily affected roles that are neither directly involved in game development nor in player-facing positions. However, some exceptions were noted within the RuneScape team, aligning with Jagex’s strategic aim for a more streamlined development process.
Despite the job reductions, the commitment to RuneScape 3 remains steadfast. Jagex reassures players that their future roadmap is intact and that there will be no deviations from their current content development trajectory.“We will talk to you about this when the time is right, ” stated JagexHooli, addressing community concerns.
Supporting Affected Employees
The studio has emphasized the importance of the well-being of the employees impacted by these changes. Their focus, as reiterated by the Community Manager, is to support those affected during this challenging transition.
Project Zanaris Paused
Alongside the layoffs, work on ‘Project Zanaris’, which was intended to enable private servers for Old School RuneScape, has been postponed indefinitely. Jagex explained their decision with a commitment to delivering a superior Old School RuneScape experience, emphasizing that other areas of the game require immediate attention.
“While Zanaris was an ambitious and innovative project, it would not have met player expectations in the near term, ” Jagex noted. The developer aims to concentrate on what truly matters to the community at this moment.
Exciting New Developments
In recent news, Jagex has expanded its offerings with the launch of RuneScape: Dragonwilds, a survival cooperative multiplayer game available on Steam Early Access. Player engagement with the game has been notable, with Steam analytics reporting purchase numbers from different sources varying widely—from 550, 000 to 842, 000 users. This indicates a strong interest in Jagex’s new ventures despite the internal challenges faced by the company.
As Jagex navigates these changes, their ability to adapt and prioritize player experience will be critical in maintaining community support and fostering growth in the RuneScape universe.
