iFixit Lowers Nintendo Switch Repairability Score Ahead of Switch 2 Launch
As we approach the highly anticipated release of the Nintendo Switch 2, iFixit has announced a significant reduction in the repairability score of the original Nintendo Switch. The score has plummeted from an impressive 8 out of 10 to a mere 4. Although the physical design of the 2017 console remains unchanged, iFixit has updated its assessment criteria, reflecting a progressive understanding of repairability within the handheld gaming sector over the past eight years.
With the new console on the horizon, iFixit recognized the necessity for consumers to make informed comparisons between the original and the latest model. The initial mixed nature of the Switch’s design—serving as both a home console and a portable device—complicated its original rating. However, given Nintendo’s emphasis on the fact that a majority of players use the Switch undocked, iFixit is now evaluating it more stringently as a handheld gaming device.
Reasons Behind the Score Reduction
What specific factors prompted iFixit to slash the score? One major issue is the difficulty in removing the battery, which is glued in place, complicating replacements. Additionally, the console can only be charged via a port that is directly soldered onto the main circuit board, which poses significant repair challenges.iFixit also highlights Nintendo’s lack of support for repairs, as the company has not provided official replacement parts or detailed repair guides for the original Switch.
Furthermore, acquiring the specific thermal compound required for various internal repairs has proven problematic. While the notorious Joy-Con drift is a well-known issue, it’s important to note that the repairability score does not penalize durability. However, the prevalence of faulty joysticks has raised concerns about the overall ease of repairs in the device.
Past Revisions and Industry Comparisons
This isn’t the first instance where iFixit has revised a repairability score in light of new insights. In 2023, it lowered the iPhone 14’s score after it was discovered that Apple had begun using software to tie individual phone parts to specific devices, complicating independent repairs despite physical accessibility.
While iFixit acknowledges some positive aspects of the original Switch—such as easily replaceable storage options and a relatively straightforward internal layout—the advantages are diminished when compared to competing products. Companies like ASUS with the ROG Ally and Lenovo with the Legion Go have set higher benchmarks for repairability.
Looking Ahead: Hopes for Nintendo Switch 2
iFixit hopes that Nintendo will take valuable lessons from this experience for the Switch 2. Furthermore, New York’s recent Right to Repair legislation, effective for devices manufactured after July 1, 2023, could compel Nintendo to provide parts and repair information for the new console, particularly for components like batteries and screens. Should Nintendo decide to offer parts and maintenance guides for the original Switch while it remains in the market, iFixit has expressed willingness to reevaluate its repairability score.
