As you dive into Hollow Knight: Silksong, you might quickly realize the absence of Nail Upgrades, a feature that defined combat in the original Hollow Knight. In the sequel, it takes a while before you can unleash similar power. However, there’s a system in place for upgrading your pin, which becomes available after progressing through much of Act 1.

This pin sharpening system functions differently than the nail upgrades of its predecessor; it’s more straightforward but can be a challenge to discover. Each upgrade requires completing a relatively lengthy quest, rather than simply acquiring pale ore like before. Be ready for an extensive journey to enhance your arsenal.

Restoring Bellhart

Restoring Bellhart is essential to your story arc, so it’s a task you can’t overlook. You can access the upper portion of Bellhart from the Shellwood area; it becomes reachable once you acquire the wall cling ability.

Navigate through the noisy and perilous tunnels filled with unsettling creatures and prepare for a challenging duel with the Widow. It’s advisable to ensure that you’re equipped with the best gear before undertaking this fight.

Once you emerge victorious and bind the Widow’s essence, Bellhart will return to some semblance of its former glory. Instead of tackling other quests straight away, proceed up the stairs to the left of the shop and head up to the second building on the right, where you’ll encounter the Pinmaster.

This expert will be eager to sharpen Hornet’s pin, marking your first upgrade. There are more upgrades available, but you will need to gather Pale Oil from the Citadel for each subsequent enhancement.

Acquiring Your First Pale Oil

To initiate the second upgrade for your pin, it’s crucial to have defeated the Last Judge at the Citadel’s entrance, as you’ll need to clear the area to find Pale Oil. Be prepared—this resource is not located until you delve deeper into the Choral Chambers.

Upon reaching the eastern section, activate the Bellway located at the bottom right of the tall room for your convenience. The Pale Oil can be found in a room directly adjacent to the large wheel used for altering routes.

However, accessing this area requires some creative navigation. Start by heading upwards towards Songclave in the eastern upper section, then take the high road to the west.

Along your route, you’ll encounter Clockwork Dancers. This battle should pose minimal trouble if you’ve honed your combat skills. After dispatching them, you’ll unveil a much-desired path, but tread carefully—it can be quite treacherous.

Continue downwards, maneuvering past discount buzz saws and formidable foes, then ascend along the right side by bouncing off gears and expertly clinging to the walls. Timing is crucial here.

Once you’ve weaved between gears, you will find yourself in a spacious room teeming with enemies that can be dispatched relatively easily. On the far side, you’ll encounter the large wheel which now allows horizontal entry to a new area.

Navigating this section isn’t particularly complicated, though there is a specific spot to focus on. From the wheel chamber, proceed to the right and upwards, as your entrance is temporarily obstructed by a moving block that must be struck from the opposite side.

Clear out more foes, drop down, hit the block for easier future access, and continue right. Prepare to drop into a pit leading downwards, and upon hitting the base of the pit, start heading left.

For a shortcut, once you reach the first floating platform, lure an enemy to the left and jump on it to reach a higher platform. The left room leads directly to the coveted Pale Oil—you’ll just need to manipulate some blocks to gain entry.

Carefully navigate around large sliding blocks, pushing them aside, and when you reach a dead end, ascend using the newly positioned blocks. Continue left to discover your Pale Oil conveniently situated with an easy exit nearby.

The sign featuring three pins outside this location indicates that it was once home to some Pinmasters, hinting at the presence of Pale Oil. After collecting it, return to Bellhart and converse with the Pinmaster once more to sharpen your pin.

He will inform you that any time you discover Pale Oil, you can return to him for further pin enhancements. As you explore the Citadel, make sure to keep an eye out for the three-pin symbol, which signifies additional rewards awaiting you.
