What’s Next for the Baldur’s Gate Franchise?

The astounding success of Baldur’s Gate 3, coupled with Larian Studios’ unexpected choice not to develop a sequel, has left fans eager for insights into the future of the franchise. Dan Ayoub, Senior Vice President of Digital Games at Hasbro, hinted at potential developments during a recent interview with IGN at GDC 2025.

Future Plans in the Works

Expressing enthusiasm about the franchise, Ayoub stated, “A lot of people are very interested in Baldur’s Gate. We’re kind of working out our plans for the future and what we’re going to be doing with that.”He reassured fans that updates would be shared soon, maintaining a careful and strategic approach to the franchise’s direction.

A Measured Approach to Development

Ayoub emphasized that the team is not rushing into decisions.“We’re going to take a very measured approach, ”he said, recognizing the importance of thoughtful planning. With numerous possibilities on the table, he mentioned that discussions about the franchise’s direction are underway, and fans should expect news in the near future.

Beyond Mainline Installments

While fans are eager for a new mainline game, Ayoub’s comments suggest that any announcements might not immediately pertain to a direct sequel. Despite this, there is potential for alternative initiatives that could maintain heightened interest in the Baldur’s Gate series.

As anticipation grows, fans are particularly keen for more content focusing on the compelling characters introduced in Baldur’s Gate 3. Ayoub acknowledged the challenge of meeting such high expectations, stating, “I’m never one to shy down from a challenge… developers love to have a high bar to go after.”He conveyed confidence that the team is actively exploring innovative ideas to elevate the series to new heights.
