Warhammer 40K Space Marine 2: A Groundbreaking Launch

The highly anticipated sequel, Warhammer 40K Space Marine 2, has made headlines with its exceptional sales performance. Within just 24 hours of its release, Saber Interactive’s latest third-person shooter sold a remarkable two million units. By the end of November, the total sales reached a staggering five million.

Financial Success for Games Workshop

This title has emerged as one of the top-selling games of 2024, providing a substantial revenue boost for its license holder, Games Workshop. Their recently published half-year financial report indicated a promising trend:

During the period, our licensing partners launched two new video games; Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, a third-person shooter for PC and console, and Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks, a combat racing game. Established games continue to contribute, alongside royalty income earned following the success of Space Marine 2. We recognise that successes like these for Warhammer are not a given in the world of video games. Clearly, we are looking for the next one. We remain cautious when forecasting royalty income.

Royalty Income Surge

Notably, licensing revenue from royalty income surged by £18 million, totaling £30.1 million for the period (or £19.3 million to £31.4 million at constant currency rates). The royalty income is calculated in accordance with IFRS 15, which states:

• ‘Guarantee income’ is recognized fully at the inception of the contract once the performance obligations are met.
• ‘Earned income’ is acknowledged only when it can be reliably measured, typically following reporting from licensees.

During this period, earned income soared to £26.1 million, a significant leap from the previous year’s £5.9 million, primarily driven by the success of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.

The Challenges Ahead

While Games Workshop celebrates these remarkable figures, they also understand the unpredictable nature of video game success. Although a plethora of Warhammer and Warhammer 40K titles have been released over the last decade, none have matched the commercial success of Space Marine 2. The challenge of replicating this hit will be formidable.

In exciting news for fans, Saber Interactive has announced plans to enrich Space Marine 2 with a wealth of new content slated for rollout throughout 2025.
