Takaya Imamura stands as a titan in the realm of game design, having shaped some of the industry’s most memorable characters over his three-decade tenure at Nintendo. He was instrumental in the creation of beloved figures such as Captain Falcon and Tingle, and his contributions spanned classics like Star Fox, F-Zero, and The Legend of Zelda. In 2021, Imamura transitioned away from Nintendo and embarked on a bold new venture: the launch of his original game, OMEGA 6: The Triangle Stars.

OMEGA 6 is not merely a game; it is inspired by a manga of the same name, also penned by Imamura. The narrative unfolds centuries into the future, where an explosion of extraterrestrial settlers has altered Earth’s dynamics. Players will accompany protagonists Thunder and Kyla as they embark on an adventure to explore new habitable worlds. This 16-bit title offers an exhilarating journey across three vastly different planets—Impostar, Igni, and Froslara—each presenting unique challenges, opportunities for negotiation, and turn-based combat scenarios.

Recently, ScreenRant had the opportunity to sit down with Takaya Imamura, where he shared insights about the intricacies of adapting a new intellectual property (IP), the nostalgia-infused retro elements of OMEGA 6, and the distinct experiences of leading a small team compared to his extensive collaborations at Nintendo.

The Challenges of Adapting an Original IP into a Game

A Smaller Team Fuels OMEGA 6’s Development

ScreenRant: Can you elaborate on the decision-making process that led to adapting OMEGA 6 from your manga series into a game?

Takaya Imamura: Initially, I was conceptualizing a brand new adventure game. However, the producer proposed using the existing world of OMEGA 6 from the comic. That suggestion opened up our direction.

Takaya Imamura: While developing a new IP is always a challenge, we felt it was a venture worth pursuing. Since OMEGA 6 was already established as a manga, we saw a unique opportunity to approach development in a cross-media manner, albeit on a smaller scale.

ScreenRant: How does working on this project compare to your experiences at Nintendo, especially regarding team size?

Takaya Imamura: The entire experience was remarkably different. With such a compact team of only seven people, there was a palpable concern that if anyone were to leave, our progress could stall.

ScreenRant: How did it feel to return to the pixel art style after all these years? Is it an aesthetic you missed?

Takaya Imamura: Given my current circumstances, working in 2D felt like the best option. Although it is pixel art, the tools I now use differ significantly from those in the past, allowing me to reapproach the medium with a fresh perspective.

ScreenRant: What strategies did you use to ensure OMEGA 6 appeals to both longtime fans of retro games and newer gamers unfamiliar with that style?

Takaya Imamura: I could delve into specifics, but I aim to adhere to certain standards that ensure the game’s accessibility. Any elements or difficulty spikes that didn’t align with these criteria were excluded from the final product.

ScreenRant: In prior interviews, you mentioned that Star Fox 64 reflected much of your vision. Now that OMEGA 6 stems from your own manga and design leadership, do you believe it embodies an even greater personal vision?

Takaya Imamura: Absolutely. I constantly reflected on whether I deserved the opportunity to create a game that encapsulates my personal tastes so thoroughly. There’s a deep sense of fulfillment here that I didn’t experience during my time at Nintendo.
