Age of Darkness offers players a challenging real-time strategy (RTS) experience where they must defend against relentless hordes of night creatures. In this unforgiving world, failure is inevitable, but understanding the reasons behind it can be difficult if you’re unclear on what went wrong.

Similar to games like They Are Billions, achieving your first victory in Age of Darkness requires considerable experimentation. To expedite your success, we’ve compiled a set of strategies that can help you endure even the most daunting Death Nights.

Explore, Expand, and Defend

The core gameplay loop in Age of Darkness hinges on three essential actions: exploration, expansion, and defense. Players are tasked with scavenging the map for resources, establishing their base to harness these resources, and preparing for fierce Nightmares. Engaging in this cycle will be central to your gameplay as you strive for victory.

Identify and Procure Resources

As the game begins, your priority should be to explore your immediate environment. Allocate a few soldiers to safeguard your Keep, while the rest venture out in search of resources. Focus on locating:

  • Stone deposits
  • Fertile land
  • Strategic choke points

Construct Outposts

A unique feature of Age of Darkness is the ability to build structures that do not require connection to a power grid from your main base. This flexibility allows you to create temporary outposts dedicated to gathering specific resources. For instance, if stone deposits are distant, you can establish a Quarry in their vicinity without restrictions. Ensure to assign guards for protection, and if a Death Night approaches, dismantle the outpost and return troops to safety until dawn arrives.

Be aware that Nightmares can spawn in previously explored areas obscured by fog. Keeping your territory illuminated is crucial for maintaining a safe zone.

Fortify Your Walls

While walls serve as a barrier against Nightmares, a single layer may not suffice during Death Nights. Fortunately, players can construct multiple layers of walls for enhanced defense. However, be cautious not to create too many layers, as defeating Nightmares is essential to ending Death Nights. If ranged units are obstructed by your defenses, they won’t be able to engage the enemy effectively.

Establish Scratching Posts

A scratching post consists of a series of walls placed strategically to distract Nightmares during Death Nights. This tactic can mitigate damage to your primary defensive structures by drawing some enemies away, allowing your ranged units time to strike. Create an extension of walls that extends outward from your main defenses. Once you unlock the Ignite ability from the Wood Workshop, scratching posts can also be transformed into traps.

Enhance Your Hero’s Abilities

Your hero is a pivotal unit with impressive stats, but their true value lies in their unique skills. For instance, the hero Edwin possesses a Flame Shield ability that can protect him while dealing damage to foes. Each hero brings distinct capabilities and playstyles, so make it a point to leverage them in battles to maximize their effectiveness.

Utilize Your Resources Wisely

While accumulating resources for upgrades is vital, allowing them to sit idle can hinder your growth. In addition to constructing buildings and training units, you can trade surplus resources at Trading Bazaars, where you can exchange unwanted supplies for those you urgently need.

Modify Unit Targeting Priorities

To manage your units more effectively during combat, modify their targeting priorities. You can do this by pressing F or clicking the appropriate button located next to the Repair All button in the unit actions menu. Adjust archers to focus on high-threat enemies, while melee units should target the nearest foes.

Pace Yourself

Age of Darkness does not emphasize speed. You can pause the game anytime by pressing the space bar or the pause button in the upper-right corner. With the next Death Night always looming, take the time to strategize and plan your next moves without pressure.
