Development of Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster Began in 2018

Exciting News on Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Remaster
In a recent interview, Kazutoyo Maehiro, the director of the highly anticipated remaster, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, shared fascinating insights into the game’s development, which has been underway since 2018. This discussion included members of the original 1997 development team, shedding light on the creative journey behind this project.[Thanks, Famitsu!]
The Journey from Concept to Creation
During the interview, the topic of how this definitive edition emerged—nearly three decades after the original release and 18 years following the PSP port, War of the Lions—was a focal point. Maehiro revealed that the initial spark for the remaster began in May 2018, fueled by a Niconico Douga stream that highlighted the original title as a tribute to the “Return to Ivalice”series of Alliance Raids.
A Personal Experience Reimagined
Maehiro reminisced about reliving Final Fantasy Tactics during the stream alongside significant figures such as Yasumi Matsuno, the original game’s director, and Naoki Yoshida, the director and producer of Final Fantasy XIV. Despite his appreciation for the game’s depth, he noted that certain outdated elements—particularly the user interface—detracted from the experience. This realization fueled his desire to revitalize the game, making it accessible and enjoyable for modern audiences. However, significant progress on the remaster had to wait until the completion of Final Fantasy XVI.
Focusing on Originality
In a decisive move, Maehiro confirmed that Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will forego additional content introduced in the PSP version. The development team’s goal is to craft an experience that resonates with new players in 2025, aligning the remaster closely with the original game framework for a more authentic experience.
