Debate on Pokemon Legends: Z-A Retaining Original Gen 6 Starters

Upcoming Release of Pokémon Legends: Z-A is set for 2025; however, no specific launch date has yet been provided by the developers. This uncertainty leaves fans curious about critical elements of the game, including the identity of the Starter Pokémon. Despite the lack of official announcements, various rumors continue to circulate regarding which Pokémon might be featured.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A is expected to unfold in the Kalos Region, famously introduced in Pokémon X and Y. Current speculation suggests that the game will likely reintroduce the Starter Pokémon from these earlier games. Several factors contribute to this hypothesis, but this choice brings both advantages and disadvantages.
The Pros and Cons of Returning Gen 6 Starter Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Pokemon Legends: Z-A Could Revitalize Gen 6 Starters
The iconic trio of Fennekin, Froakie, and Chespin emerged from Pokémon X and Y, evolving into Delphox, Greninja, and Chesnaught, respectively. While all three possess a dedicated following, Greninja has undeniably eclipsed the others, especially after its introduction in Super Smash Bros.and the Ash Greninja form showcased in the anime series.
Conversely, Delphox and Chesnaught faced criticism during their initial reveal. Many fans argue that these two final-stage evolutions lack cohesion with their earlier forms, suggesting that their designs could have been significantly improved. Reintroducing the Kalos Starters in Pokémon Legends: Z-A would provide an opportunity for these Pokémon to gain the recognition they deserve.
Moreover, this move could delight long-time fans. While Pokémon X and Y introduced the concept of Mega Evolutions, they did not extend this feature to their own Starters, opting instead to highlight Pokémon from previous generations. Given that Mega Evolution is a cherished feature within the franchise and set to return in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the re-adaptation of Kalos Starters could finally grant them their own Mega Evolutions.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A Offers a Wealth of Starter Alternatives
Nevertheless, the decision to feature the Kalos Starters is not without its pitfalls. There exists a significant demand for Starters from other generations. Besides Greninja, the Kalos trio may not resonate as strongly with fans when compared to alternatives like Incineroar or Empoleon, who boast substantial popularity. This means that if the rumors hold true, enthusiasts of these other Pokémon may have to wait for future generations to enjoy their favorites.
Incineroar stands out as a powerful contender for fan-favorite status, while Empoleon has sparked dialogues surrounding its ties to French culture. Pokémon Legends: Arceus featured a trio of Starters deeply connected to its historical Japanese setting, suggesting that Pokémon Legends: Z-A might benefit from choosing Pokémon that reflect its Parisian influence, especially considering Lumiose City’s design was inspired by the French capital.
The original X and Y Starters drew inspiration from traditional RPG classes, a solid narrative theme for the game. The dilemma arises as many players desire Pokémon Legends: Z-A to embrace innovative choices, while others advocate for the return of familiar faces from Gen 6. Balancing these expectations presents a substantial challenge for game developers.
