During a recent visit to Oslo for the preview of Funcom’s highly anticipated game, Dune Awakening, a roundtable discussion was held, allowing members of the press to engage directly with Game Director Joel Bylos. The insights shared during this session shed light on various game features and core mechanics. For context, Dune Awakening is scheduled for a launch in the first quarter on PC with NVIDIA DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation support from day one, followed by releases on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X.

PVP Dynamics in Dune Awakening

Q: From what I understand, PVP in Dune Awakening seems to be largely focused on world interactions. Will there be any modes for ranked instanced PVP competitions?

A: Currently, our design is centered around world PVP. There are no plans for instanced ranked modes at this time.

Creative Limitations Influenced by the Film Franchise

Q: You previously mentioned challenges in depicting the Fremen. Were there other restrictions due to the film adaptations of Dune? How did that shape your game design?

A: Absolutely, there have been several factors to navigate. For instance, with the momentum from the success of the second film, I anticipated that we might have more creative freedom. However, upon the announcement of a third film, we were informed about particular elements from the second book that we could not incorporate, although significant portions of our game had already been built around them.

As details emerged about the third film, my collaboration with Legendary’s team proved beneficial, ensuring we maintained alignment. They provide constructive feedback, particularly when it comes to preserving the vision that Denis Villeneuve has for the cinematic universe.

For example, our initial trailer depicted Paul at a throne in the future, but we were instructed to revise this portrayal since the implication of his royal status contradicted the narrative direction laid out in the films. Instead, we opted for a more neutral stance, showing him standing in front of a mural instead.

Working closely with the film team’s creative process has indeed been a rewarding challenge, fostering innovation within the constraints we’ve faced, and allowing us to create unique experiences for fans familiar with the Dune lore.

Tapping into Survival Game Enthusiasm

Q: When conceptualizing Dune Awakening, which existing gaming audiences do you believe it will resonate with the most?

A: Primarily, I see survival game enthusiasts as our target demographic, especially given their substantial presence in the gaming landscape. We’ve seen great success with titles like Conan Exiles, and we anticipate a similar appeal.

This game will also attract players who enjoy cooperative gameplay and exploration in richly detailed worlds. While our fanbase includes devoted Dune followers, we’re aiming to engage a broader audience who appreciate dynamic, expansive open-world experiences.

Understanding Looting Mechanics in Dungeons

Q: In showcasing gameplay at the recent event, we saw combat mechanics within dungeons. How is looting structured in these scenarios? Do players find resources throughout or is it primarily at the end of the dungeon?

A: Loot distribution will vary based on the dungeon’s design. Typically, the primary rewards are found at the end, complemented by smaller treasures along the way. Currently, we are implementing a system whereby all players who reach the boss will receive loot, ensuring equitable rewards while minimizing the need for concern over loot sharing within your group.

Additionally, unique resources are tied to specific locations — for instance, vehicle parts can chiefly be found in ecology labs, while modern weaponry is generally recovered from shipwrecks. Our instanced looting system guarantees that players receive their own loot without the risk of theft from others, establishing a more cooperative environment throughout the dungeons.

An enticing aspect of our system is the schematic mechanic. Players will discover rare schematics in the game world that allow for limited crafting opportunities, enhancing the game’s economy through item uniqueness.

Future Server Hosting and Community Features

Q: Is there a framework for player-hosted servers similar to other survival games?

A: We are exploring options to provide hosting capabilities for players, akin to what Fallout 76 offers. However, current server architecture complicates this significantly, as maintaining multiple maps and allowing for player rental poses logistical challenges. We’re evaluating how best to implement this, prioritizing user accessibility and enjoyment without imposing financial burdens on players.

In-Game Trading System Insights

Q: Is there something like a trade auction house within the game?

A: Yes, players can utilize an area known as the Exchange within major cities for buy and sell orders. Additionally, you can engage in direct trades with fellow players. While you might also drop items for others, resolving the permissions around looting is still under scrutiny.

Player Versus Player Dynamics

Q: Is there an option for players to duel one another, given the absence of instanced PVP?

A: While we see the value in implementing dueling mechanics, I must clarify this feature won’t be available at launch as we’re working within a tight development schedule.

Item Loss Upon Death

Q: When a player dies in Dune Awakening, what items do they lose?

A: Players do not drop items; instead, they lose gathered resources. Specifically, 100% of the spice and coins in possession are forfeited unless banked. Approximately 30% of other resources are also lost upon death, but players can return to reclaim their corpse in PVE zones, while looting is permissible in PVP areas.

Ability Customization and Quality of Life Enhancements

Q: I’m impressed with the ability customization options. Will players have the ability to save builds for easier access?

A: This is a valuable quality of life enhancement that we’re considering. Although it’s not currently in the game, we do recognize its importance and aim to implement a workable solution in the future.
