Comparing How Great People Function in Civ 7 vs Civ 6

One of the major transformations in gameplay mechanics introduced in Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 is the revamped approach to Great People. Previously, in Civilization 6 and its predecessors, Great People played a crucial role by providing civilizations with strategic advantages. In contrast, Civ 7 presents a more streamlined and straightforward system regarding their significance and functionality. While in Civ 6, players accumulated Great Person points to acquire specific types of Great People, such as Great Merchants or Great Scientists, this mechanism has undergone a significant overhaul in the latest version.
The simplification of the Great Person system in Civilization 7 is a deliberate effort to reduce micromanagement. Great People are now assigned specifically to each civilization, moving away from the intricate rules that defined their predecessors. In Civilization 6, each Great Person was not only unique but also determined by complex mechanics that varied within their subclasses. However, in Civ 7, Great People are no longer tied to specific historical figures, and their effects have been completely randomized by type. This article will explore the updated functionality of Great People in Civilization 7 and how it contrasts with their role in Civilization 6.
The Role of Great People in Civilization 6
Unlocking Great People through Resource Points
In Civilization 6, players earn Great People by accumulating Great Person points through various resources their empires produce, such as Science and Faith. This system involves competing for a pool of historical figures, the availability of which varies based on the actions of all players. Unique historical personalities like Isaac Newton and John the Baptist are represented, and each one provides distinct abilities, with the notable exception of Great Prophets, who primarily facilitate the establishment of religions. As a civilization secures a Great Person, the queue for the next one begins, fostering a competitive environment.
Many Great People in Civilization 6 come equipped with multiple uses, allowing for powers to be employed in various scenarios. For example, Gustave Eiffel can boost production for Wonder construction up to two times. Players often categorize Great People into different domains, including Great Admirals, Engineers, Merchants, and more.Great Prophets are particularly significant for achieving a Religious Victory. The complexity of these mechanics often enables Great People to sway the outcome of conflicts, contributing strategically to overall gameplay.
The Evolution of Great People in Civilization 7
Civ 7’s Great People System is Civilization-Specific
In contrast, Civilization 7 simplifies the previously complex dynamics of Great People by assigning them to specific civilizations. Players can now purchase or produce Great People contingent upon fulfilling particular requirements, greatly enhancing accessibility. For instance, while playing as the Abbasid in the Exploration Age, the player can produce an ‘Alim by constructing the Ulema Unique Quarter, which entails building both the Madrasa and Mosque in the same Urban district. Once these prerequisites are met, ‘Alims become available throughout the Exploration Age, with their powers randomized.
This new system eliminates the need for accumulating points or specific resource requirements to unlock Great People. However, their abilities are still meant to harmonize with each civilization’s specialties. For example, the Han can utilize the Shi Dafu with a focus on scientific advancements. Furthermore, the uniqueness of Great People within a civilization remains intact, with character concepts still inspired by historical figures, such as Mencius from China.
Moreover, while there is no cap on the number of Great People players can acquire, the increasing cost for each successive purchase adds a layer of strategy. Great People still play a pivotal role in enhancing building strategies, although the systems governing them have changed from Civ 6.
