Reviving Dino Crisis: Hopes for a Comeback

The beloved Dino Crisis series from CAPCOM could be in line for a revival, following recent remakes and sequels in the gaming world like Onimusha and Okami. Exciting developments suggest that fans of the survival horror genre may soon have something to look forward to.

Recent Trademark Activity Sparks Interest

On March 4th, CAPCOM filed a trademark for Dino Crisis in Japan, as reported by Gematsu on Bluesky. While trademark registrations can sometimes lead nowhere, this instance is gaining traction among fans. A user from the ResetERA forums, known as Jawmuncher, noted that trademarks filed in Japan often indicate a genuine intention to revitalize an IP. This aligns with CAPCOM’s history; they successfully rebooted the Onimusha franchise following a similar move.

A Glimpse Into the Past

Despite being relatively inactive for several years, Dino Crisis made a small return with recent releases on GOG, which featured enhanced versions of the first two games. These improvements include:

  • Updated DirectX game renderer
  • New graphical options such as V-Sync control and gamma correction
  • Integer scaling and anti-aliasing enhancements
  • Support for increased rendering resolution up to 4K
  • Enhanced color depth to 32-bit
  • Smoother animations and video playback
  • Cloud save functionality

While these re-releases are a welcome treat for followers of the series, there’s concern that they might not signal a full-scale revival. Interestingly, series creator Shinji Mikami has voiced skepticism regarding a Dino Crisis comeback, suggesting that CAPCOM might prioritize the continued success of the Monster Hunter franchise instead.

As the gaming landscape evolves, only time will tell whether Dino Crisis will emerge from its prolonged slumber. The recent trademark filing certainly stirs hope among fans for the return of this iconic series.
