Impact of PlayStation 5 Pricing on Monster Hunter Wilds Sales

According to CAPCOM’s president, Haruhiro Tsujimoto, the sales performance of Monster Hunter Wilds is primarily influenced by the elevated price of the PlayStation 5, rather than any issues related to the game itself. In his recent discussion with Automaton, Tsujimoto expressed concerns about how the high cost of the console has affected the game’s market reception.

The Cost Barrier

Despite enjoying a solid launch, Monster Hunter Wilds saw a steep decline in sales shortly thereafter. The president pointed out that the financial burdens associated with acquiring a PlayStation 5—which includes the console itself, peripheral equipment, a required PlayStation Plus subscription for online gameplay, and the cost of the game—are substantial. This financial barrier is particularly challenging for younger gamers, who may have limited disposable income. As a result, many of them might opt for previous titles in the Monster Hunter series, such as Monster Hunter World and Monster Hunter Rise, which offer more content at a more accessible price point.

Future Strategies for Accessibility

Recognizing this challenge, CAPCOM is strategizing to enhance accessibility for new players. Tsujimoto stated that the company plans to leverage seasonal discounts to boost sales during the final months of the year. This approach is expected to improve the game’s reach among potential audiences.

Comparative Success of Nintendo Switch 2

During the same interview, Tsujimoto also discussed the Nintendo Switch 2, highlighting its better-than-anticipated success. He emphasized that the lower price point of the Switch compared to the PlayStation 5 has resonated well with cost-conscious consumers worldwide. This observation underlines a significant trend in gaming, where price sensitivity is increasingly influencing purchasing decisions.

Game Quality and Ongoing Improvements

While it’s disappointing that Monster Hunter Wilds isn’t achieving the same level of success as its predecessors, it remains a commendable entry in the franchise. Despite some criticisms regarding the game’s challenge level, the development team is actively addressing these concerns through regular free updates and additional content, ensuring that players continue to find value in their experience.

As we approach the end of the year, all eyes will be on CAPCOM’s efforts to navigate these challenges and improve the sales landscape for Monster Hunter Wilds.
