Cancelation of Unannounced Project by DOOM Creator Romero Games

Romero Games Cancels Next Project Amid Xbox Layoffs
Romero Games, the studio established by renowned DOOM creator John Romero and his wife Brenda, has officially announced the cancellation of its forthcoming unannounced game. This decision has been attributed to the recent wave of layoffs at Xbox, impacting various projects across the gaming industry.
In a statement shared via X, the studio revealed that their undisclosed publisher decided to withdraw funding not only for Romero Games’ project but also for multiple other unannounced games at different studios. This strategic move was orchestrated at a higher management level within the publishing company, beyond the studio’s influence or oversight. The statement emphasized that the cancellation does not diminish the team’s dedication, work ethic, or the quality of the game that was being developed.

Although the studio did not disclose the identity of the publisher, a recent post by Christoph Redl, a former hard surface artist at Romero Games, corroborated that the project’s cancellation is indeed linked to the significant layoffs at Xbox.
Unfortunately, due to the recent Xbox layoffs, I’ve lost my position at Romero Games. I’m now actively looking for new opportunities as a Prop Artist, Hard Surface Artist, or 3D Artist. I’m open to both in-house and remote roles and excited to bring my skills to a new team.https://t.co/7vhj4bZ10b

Industry-Wide Impact of Xbox Layoffs
Romero Games is not the only studio feeling the repercussions of the recent layoffs at Xbox. Numerous developers have faced similar challenges, including Turn 10 Studios, which is responsible for the Forza Motorsport series, where over 70 employees were laid off. Additionally, Zenimax Online has ceased development of its new MMORPG, and the development team behind Perfect Dark, known as The Initiative, has been disbanded after its highly anticipated game was also canceled.
This trend highlights a broader issue currently faced by the gaming industry, as several studios reassess their projects and operational strategies in light of financial and market pressures.
