Earlier this year, Bungie announced its entry into the extraction shooter genre, a trend that’s rapidly gaining momentum, thanks to popular titles such as Escape from Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown. Today, the anticipation culminated in the full reveal of Marathon, complete with gripping gameplay trailers and an official release date. You can view the exciting announcement in the video above.

Originating from the creative minds behind the legendary Halo and Destiny franchises, Marathon promises an exhilarating multiplayer experience. Players will immerse themselves in dynamic maps, competing against both fellow players and hostile NPCs while hunting for valuable loot and strategizing their extraction, all while avoiding untimely deaths.

Looting and Warfare: The Heart of Marathon

The game’s maps will be rich in diverse loot, including weapons, gadgets, and various quality gear. Players can opt to gather resources scattered across the environment or engage in combat against others to quickly accumulate gear. One unique aspect of Marathon is that upon dying, players drop all items they have collected, allowing rivals a chance to snatch up any dropped loot.

Character Variety: Choose Your Runner

At launch, players can choose from six distinct characters known as Runners, each tailored to different playstyles. This allows gamers to align their approach with personal preferences. While customization of weapons, equipment, and appearance is encouraged, each Runner is endowed with unique abilities that can turn the tide during intense encounters.

Gameplay Dynamics and Team Structure

Marathon is set to feature multiple maps, with up to 18 players participating in each round. Teams can consist of up to three players, making it ideal for collaborative gameplay. Although designed primarily for trio play, the studio has confirmed that solo players can also join the action, albeit without a dedicated solo mode.

Mark your calendars for September 23, the official release date for Marathon. Excitingly, despite being published by Sony, this live service title will be available across multiple platforms, including PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Additionally, early alpha access play tests will commence ahead of the launch, providing gamers a sneak peek at the adrenaline-pumping action to come.
