Assassin’s Creed Shadows: In-Depth Exploration Insights – Developers Confirm Game Offers Minimal Guidance

Ubisoft Unveils Exploration Features in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Following a recent delay in the game’s release, Ubisoft is providing fans of Assassin’s Creed Shadows with a closer look at its exploration mechanics. Game Director Charles Benoit emphasized a significant shift in gameplay by stating that the studio aims to minimize reliance on traditional guides and indicators commonly found in previous entries.
A Fresh Approach to Exploration
According to Benoit, “We didn’t want to hold the player’s hand too much with icons and markers. We wanted to craft an open world where information was key and would become a form of reward.”This perspective aligns with the game’s theme of a shinobi warrior, requiring players to actively seek out information through various means—whether via NPC interactions, personal observations, or a network of spies. The design encourages gamers to uncover secrets organically, transforming the act of exploration into a rewarding experience.
Enhanced Viewpoints and Fast Travel
Players will still find opportunities to ascend high-altitude locations known as Viewpoints. However, the functionality has evolved; rather than revealing expansive parts of the map, players will only uncover nearby points of interest with a new observe mechanic. Notably, this version does not utilize a companion Eagle for assistance. Fast Travel Points remain accessible at these Viewpoints, but caution is advised, as some are situated in dangerous zones filled with adversaries.
Kakurega: Safehouses for Strategic Play
Throughout their journey, players can acquire safehouses dubbed “Kakurega.”These locations act as extensions of the central Hideout, a customizable base for operations. Kakurega offers several practical functions, including:
- Restocking rations, tools, and ammunition
- Accessing gear stashes
- Managing and accepting contracts
- Restocking scouts
- Coordinating allies for support
Furthermore, Kakuregas feature their own Fast Travel Points, ensuring that players have safe havens throughout the game.
Navigating the Terrain
Assassin’s Creed Shadows brings a new challenge to traversal: certain mountainous regions in Japan will be unclimbable due to their steepness. Ubisoft encourages players to utilize roads, as shortcuts may prove to be unreliable. For those uncertain of their path, a new toggleable Pathfinder feature can assist by drawing a line to the objective—provided they have a tracked quest and relevant information from a scout.
Objective Board: A New Quest Management System
The quest management system, referred to as the Objective Board, plays a crucial role in identifying assassination targets. Players can zoom in on specific targets to reveal Opportunities—key quest steps that are individually selectable. Clues guide players toward these opportunities, which they must analyze to determine their next investigative steps. For clarity, deploying Scouts near these clue locations simplifies the questing process.
Utilizing Scouts for Strategic Advantages
Throughout their adventure, players will be accompanied by Scout NPCs who assist in various tasks, including:
- Locating quest objectives
- Gathering resources for Hideout upgrades
- Resetting Provincial alerts to cover tracks
Deploying multiple scouts expands the scouting radius, enhancing the likelihood of pinpointing objectives. This feature is especially beneficial for players who have not gathered all necessary clues, as Scouts can help fill in those gaps. After deployment, Scouts return at the end of a season, though players can expedite their return by paying in-game currency at a Kakurega.
Resource Management and Wealth Caches
Scouts are also instrumental in looting resource caches from Wealthy clans, which are too voluminous for individual characters to carry. Instead, players flag these caches for gradual retrieval by Scouts, with flagged stockpiles converted into Hideout upgrades at the close of each season.
Release Date and Game Launch
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set to launch on March 20 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X. Fans are eagerly anticipating a fresh take on exploration and strategy within the franchise.
