Assassin’s Creed Shadows Gameplay Duration: 30–40 Hours for Main Story and Over 80 Hours with Side Quests

Upcoming Release Details for Assassin’s Creed Shadows
During a recent showcase event in Japan, Ubisoft Quebec’s Creative Director, Jonathan Dumont, provided insights into the anticipated duration of the upcoming game, Assassin’s Creed Shadows. As reported by Genki Gamer, Dumont indicated that players can expect the main storyline to take approximately 30 to 40 hours to complete. When including side quests and additional content, total gameplay could exceed 80 hours.
Comparative Analysis with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
This estimated gameplay time is certainly substantial, although slightly less than that of its predecessor, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. According to HowLongToBeat, players spent an average of 61 hours on the main campaign, with completionists reporting play times nearing 150 hours. Despite Valhalla’s impressive scope, many players voiced concerns regarding the prevalence of redundant fetch missions, underscoring the hope that the upcoming title will emphasize more engaging and meaningful content.
High Stakes for Ubisoft
Ubisoft finds itself under significant pressure with the launch of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The company has faced a series of disappointing commercial outcomes, including titles like Skull and Bones, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, XDefiant, and Star Wars Outlaws. Although the shorter spin-off, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, performed relatively well, Ubisoft is clearly in need of a major success. This urgency has led to the game being delayed twice, as the studio seeks to enhance the final product and ensure it resonates with audiences.
Setting and Characters
Set in the picturesque and tumultuous backdrop of 16th-century Japan during the late Sengoku period, Assassin’s Creed Shadows introduces players to two central characters: Fujibayashi Naoe, a skilled shinobi, and Yasuke, a formidable samurai. Players will have the freedom to primarily choose one protagonist throughout their journey, but certain challenges will necessitate switching characters, with each excelling in different tactics.
Innovative Stealth Mechanics
The game leverages a new iteration of the Anvil engine, featuring groundbreaking enhancements in stealth gameplay. For the first time in the series, players can become completely invisible to enemies by taking advantage of shadows, particularly during nighttime. This innovation transforms every shadowy nook into a potential hiding spot, allowing players significant strategic advances both indoors and outside. Additionally, players can extinguish lit lanterns with shurikens to create further concealment opportunities. The game also incorporates dynamic weather and seasonal effects, which influence stealth mechanics; for instance, rain muffles footsteps, while certain NPCs alter their patrols to seek shelter from the elements. Seasonal changes can dramatically modify the environmental landscape, adding another layer of realism.
Release Date and Platforms
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is slated for release on March 20 across multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X.
