Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has, for the most part, met my high expectations. However, one significant aspect continues to leave me wanting more. The excitement surrounding the game’s promotional materials, particularly the inclusion of Venom, fueled my enthusiasm. Having enjoyed both Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, I was eager to experience how this universe would interpret one of my all-time favorite villains.

As I approached the game, there was a genuine hope that Venom could be a playable character. Fortunately, I was correct in my assumption, but the experience of controlling Venom ultimately fell short of expectations. Now, over a year later, I find myself still anticipating a more substantial payoff from this tease, especially with no news of upcoming DLC for Spider-Man 2.

An Old Spider-Man Game Got My Hopes Up About Playing as Venom

Ultimate Spider-Man Let You Play as Spider-Man and Venom

Following the great success of the 2004 open-world Spider-Man 2 game, subsequent titles largely adhered to a familiar formula, creating their own genre with specific gameplay conventions. This included elements like an expansive New York City to explore, spontaneous crime encounters, and collectible items. As a result, each new Spider-Man release generated certain expectations based on its predecessors. Thus, when entering Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, I was optimistic that a beloved mechanic from earlier games would make a comeback.

Venom’s significant presence in the marketing campaign immediately reminded me of Ultimate Spider-Man, a game that first sparked joy with its dual-character gameplay featuring both Spider-Man and Venom. As I anticipated playing as Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, my hopes were cautiously optimistic. However, my excitement wouldn’t be as fully realized as I had imagined.

Spider-Man 2 Teases a Playable Venom but Doesn’t Pay It Off

There Is a Short Sequence Where You Control Venom

Unfortunately, Venom’s portrayal in Spider-Man 2 differed from how he was presented in advertising. It begins with Harry Osborn as the game’s Agent Venom.Only after an extended period, during which Peter dons the black suit, does Harry fully transform into Venom. This delayed reveal somewhat dampened my enthusiasm despite the build-up I initially felt.

Once Harry becomes Venom, players are immediately granted control, rampaging through the Oscorp building. Although the gameplay here is brief, I initially assumed it signaled the onset of more extended gameplay as Venom. At this point, Harry is depicted as a well-rounded character, leading me to hope for missions that explored his internal conflict about embracing the symbiote, akin to Eddie Brock’s journey in Ultimate Spider-Man.

While it’s reasonable for games not to align perfectly with our expectations, I had a great time with Spider-Man 2. Yet, the limited representation of Venom felt anticlimactic, especially given my anticipation. If Insomniac had known this would be the extent of Venom’s involvement, I would have preferred no playable Venom at all, as it only served to heighten my expectations.

Spider-Man 2’s Story Makes It Seem Like Venom Is Gone

Venom’s Apparent Death Seems Like Too Big a Plot Point to Quickly Reverse

Upon realizing that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 offered only a single playable sequence featuring Venom, I continued to hope for something more substantial later. Initially, I likened it to the experience of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, where Miles’ character was built throughout the original game before becoming playable in the spin-off. As I completed Spider-Man 2, I had hoped the brief Venom gameplay representation was a precursor to potential DLC or a standalone game. Then, Venom met his end.

To clarify, the symbiote was forcibly separated from Harry and destroyed, leaving him in a coma as a result of his prior illness. While comic book characters rarely stay dead for long, I felt this portrayal of Venom’s fate was too conclusive to be easily reversed for future content. This conclusion certainly appears definitive, which diminishes the likelihood of additional Venom-focused expansions without undermining the neat resolution presented in Spider-Man 2.

How Insomniac Could Still Give Us a Venom Game

Venom’s Return Could Be Set Up in Future Marvel Projects

Following the release of Spider-Man 2, narrative director Jon Paquette was somewhat elusive about the possibility of a Venom spin-off. In an interview with Business Insider, he mentioned that developers would “listen to the fans”to gauge interest in a Venom game. Since then, no concrete updates have emerged regarding any potential game featuring this beloved character.

If rumors prove accurate, Spider-Man 3 could introduce Norman Osborn as the main villain. This scenario suggests Harry might reprise his role, potentially embracing Venom’s mantle once more to aid Spider-Man against the Green Goblin.

Additionally, recent leaks hint that Insomniac is still considering a Venom spin-off, though I remain skeptical about the validity of leaks, as development priorities can shift. Nonetheless, there are plausible paths leading to Venom’s return (such as story developments in the Wolverine game Insomniac is working on) that could foreshadow his involvement in future titles.

Ultimately, while I remain doubtful about any immediate follow-up involving a standalone Venom game post-Spider-Man 2, I am definitely among the fans eager for a spin-off. The most frustrating aspect of the Venom tease is that it was an enjoyable experience, and I yearn for more. Here’s hoping Insomniac answers that call soon.
