Blizzard Entertainment has unveiled a groundbreaking perk system for Overwatch 2, poised to substantially alter the dynamics of the hero shooter. Since its inception, Overwatch 2 has seen notable modifications to its classic gameplay, including the shift from a 6v6 setup to a streamlined 5v5 format.
This pivotal alteration prompted extensive balancing efforts for Overwatch 2’s roster of heroes. Significant adjustments included transforming Doomfist from a Damage character into a Tank and modifying various heroes’ abilities to maintain game balance. Since the game’s early access launch in 2020, Blizzard has continued to implement significant changes, with the latest update scheduled for February 18, coinciding with the commencement of Season 15.
Comprehensive Overview of All Overwatch 2 Perks
The new perk system, set to be introduced in Season 15, represents a monumental shift in the core gameplay mechanics. Under this system, heroes will ascend through three levels: maintaining their standard gameplay at Level 1, selecting from two minor perks at Level 2, and finally opting for impactful major perks at Level 3. Minor perks might include enhancements such as increased knockback for Lucio’s Soundwave or added functionality for Torbjorn’s hammer, which may restore allies’ armor health.
Hero progression will allow players to tailor their characters significantly as they engage in battle. For instance, Orisa can forfeit her Javelin Spin for a Protective Barrier or gain a Charged Javelin that penetrates through foes. Reaper has access to a new ability called Dire Trigger, enabling mid-range damage through secondary fire. Winston’s Chain Lightning allows him to strike multiple adversaries simultaneously, while Hanzo can return to his beloved Scatter Arrows mechanic. Additionally, Baptiste gains a shoulder turret effective during his Amplification Matrix Ultimate, and Ramattra’s Vengeful Vortex skill enables aerial explosions to target airborne enemies.
Blizzard’s “Overwatch 2 Spotlight”revealed a variety of other perks available to players. For example, Torbjorn’s high-level perks let him utilize Anchor Bolts to secure his turrets to vertical surfaces or deploy an upgraded Level 3 turret. Meanwhile, Pharah can opt for Concussive Vacuum, effectively gathering opponents for devastating attacks, and Ana can select between critical hit capability with Headhunter or self-use Nano Boost with Shrike, a lifesaver for players under attack.
Furthermore, Blizzard intends to refresh the perks regularly, with a significant update anticipated mid-year. The introduction of this perk system is a pivotal change in Overwatch 2’s gameplay landscape, and community feedback will be crucial to gauge its reception.
