Overview of Upcoming Changes in Overwatch 2

  • Blizzard is reintroducing loot boxes in Overwatch 2 starting from Season 15.
  • Competitive Play will see the implementation of hero bans in Season 16, followed by map voting in a later update.
  • A Competitive mode supporting 6v6 gameplay is also in the pipeline.

Blizzard Entertainment has announced significant updates for Overwatch 2 set to roll out in Seasons 15 and 16, which include the return of loot boxes and the introduction of hero bans. Amid fierce competition from titles like Marvel Rivals, Overwatch 2 is aiming to reclaim player engagement and attract new users through these enhancements.

During its inaugural Overwatch 2 Spotlight event, Blizzard unveiled a series of anticipated updates designed to enrich the player experience. Notably, players achieving Platinum rank or higher in Competitive mode will receive exclusive weapon charms starting in Season 16, alongside the revival of rank icons in hero portraits.

Noteworthy Changes Coming to Overwatch 2

One of the most significant modifications being introduced is the return of loot boxes in Season 16. Previously a staple of the first Overwatch, loot boxes were eliminated in favor of an in-game store with the launch of Overwatch 2. However, this monetization shift has drawn criticism, making the return of loot boxes—a mechanism that allows players to earn cosmetics at no additional cost—a much-anticipated change. Players can now earn loot boxes through the free track of the Overwatch 2 battle pass and by completing weekly challenges.

Additionally, Season 16 will mark the debut of hero bans in Competitive Play, allowing players to restrict certain heroes from matches based on personal or team preference. A map voting feature will also be added but is expected to launch after Season 16 concludes.

In the short term, Overwatch 2 will reintroduce the 6v6 format for an Open Queue Competitive Play mode during Season 15, permitting teams to consist of two tanks. Players can also look forward to the revival of Overwatch Classic in the GOATs meta and a variety of returning seasonal events such as Lunar New Year, April Fools, Summer Games, and Halloween festivities. As Blizzard implements these changes, the gaming community eagerly anticipates whether they will lead to a resurgence in Overwatch 2’s popularity among long-time fans and newcomers alike.
