This photo, shared on the Switch subreddit earlier today, reveals details about a JoyCon Charger Grip specifically designed for the anticipated console.

A Key Feature: Adoption of Samsung’s microSD Express Format

Perhaps the most notable revelation from the screenshot is the confirmation that Nintendo’s forthcoming console will utilize Samsung’s microSD Express format. According to the internal WeU list displayed in the image, microSD cards for the Switch 2 will come in 256GB and 512GB variants, priced at $49.99 and $84.99, respectively.

Our initial report from February 2024 hinted that the Nintendo Switch 2 could adopt the microSD Express format. At that time, Samsung announced that the innovation was the result of a collaborative effort with an undisclosed “customer”aimed at developing a customized solution. Despite their tiny size, these memory cards deliver powerful SSD-like performance and capacity to help users get more out of demanding modern and future applications.”

Performance Comparisons and Industry Trends

Samsung’s microSD Express cards boast impressive specifications, achieving a sequential read speed of up to 800MB/s. This performance is 1.4 times faster than traditional SATA SSDs—capped at around 560 MB/s—and significantly surpasses UHS-1 memory cards, which max out at 200 MB/s. As gaming continues to evolve, the demand for SSD-like performance is increasingly becoming essential, particularly for handling expansive virtual worlds.

While the Nintendo Switch 2 may not prioritize cutting-edge technological features, integrating the microSD Express format is crucial for attracting diverse third-party developers looking to bring their titles to the platform.
