DFC Intelligence Forecasts Robust Growth for Video Game Industry

DFC Intelligence, renowned as the premier research and advisory firm dedicated solely to the video game sector, has unveiled its 20245 market report. This analysis reveals a promising outlook for the industry, projecting significant revenue growth for the latter half of the decade. After experiencing a decline over the past two years, the market is expected to rebound from this year’s revenue of approximately US$72 billion to around US$83 billion by 2028. Including revenues from PC and console hardware, as well as mobile games, the video game market is poised to approach a staggering third of a trillion dollars within this period.

As the industry expands, the global audience for video games is also anticipated to swell. Projections suggest that by 2027, nearly half of the world’s population will be engaging in gaming activities, signifying a significant increase in participation and market engagement.

Nintendo Positioned to Dominate with Next-Generation Console

Amidst this landscape of expected growth, Nintendo is predicted to take the lead in hardware sales with its forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2. According to DFC Intelligence, this console is forecasted to become the most favored next-generation system, benefiting from its earlier release date and minimal competition. Initial sales projections indicate that the Switch 2 could sell between 15 and 17 million units in its launch year, with total sales projected to exceed 80 million units by 2028.

In contrast, the upcoming consoles from Sony and Microsoft, the PlayStation 6 and Xbox Next, are expected to struggle to enhance either company’s market share significantly. Analysts suggest that one of these two brands may find itself in a challenging third-place position, heavily reliant on which can secure early traction in the competitive landscape.

Anticipation Surrounding the Switch 2

The buzz around the Nintendo Switch 2 is palpable, and it comes as no surprise. The gaming community is rife with discussions and speculation, especially as Nintendo is reportedly preparing to unveil the first official look at this highly anticipated system early in the new year. This excitement is poised to elevate interest and hype surrounding the console as it approaches its release date.
