Nintendo Postpones Launch of Switch 2 in China

According to a recent report by Nikkei, Nintendo has indefinitely postponed the launch of its anticipated Switch 2 console in China. The delay stems from the company’s strategic decision to gauge the market demand for the Switch 2 prior to its introduction in the region.

The Timing of the Original Switch’s Launch

This situation echoes the timeline of the original Nintendo Switch, which was officially released in China in 2019—two years after its global debut. This release was facilitated through a partnership with Tencent, a collaboration that currently remains unchanged, as they have not confirmed whether they will distribute the new Switch 2 in China.

The recent postponement is not entirely unexpected. In November of the previous year, Nintendo announced plans to discontinue online services, including the eShop, in China by 2026. This closure reflects ongoing challenges in navigating the intricate landscape of China’s gaming market.

Chief analyst at Gamma Data remarked to Nikkei, “Hurdles to success in China remain high. Nintendo needs to enhance the consumer experience while complying with governmental policies, and there’s also uncertainty regarding the introduction of major international titles.”

The report additionally highlights that any new console and its accompanying software must undergo rigorous approval from Chinese authorities. This regulatory scrutiny may impose further limitations on the release of both hardware and software in the region.

Market Demand and Pre-orders

On the demand front, retailers have begun accepting pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2, both online and in physical stores. However, with the indefinite delay, these pre-orders are likely to be canceled, prompting questions about consumer enthusiasm and the potential for future sales in this market.
