Insights into the Nintendo Switch 2’s Motherboard and SoC

Excitement is building in the gaming community with the latest revelation about the Nintendo Switch 2’s hardware. A new video has offered an in-depth examination of the device’s motherboard and system-on-chip (SoC), shedding light on several key details.

Published by 极客湾Geekerwan, the video features an authentic Nintendo Switch 2 motherboard and SoC obtained from a unit that was illegally sold prior to its official release. This discovery aligns with previous rumors suggesting that units could be acquired ahead of launch at inflated prices.

Key Specifications of the SoC

In the analysis, as summarized by ResetERA member R3ndezvous, it was revealed that the SoC is significantly larger than its predecessor, the Tegra X1. While the original measures 118mm², the new SoC spans 207mm², making it not only larger than the older model but also surpassing the size of the mobile RTX 3050 Ti GPU. Furthermore, the die indicates a tapeout year of 2021, which suggests that development on this chip has been underway for some time.

Interestingly, while the chip is described as having an 8nm process node, it seems to be more in line with Samsung’s 10nm technology, sparking discussions on its potential performance capabilities.

Analyzing the Nintendo Switch 2 GPU

The GPU showcased in the video demonstrates characteristics associated with NVIDIA’s Ampere architecture, albeit with some attributes reminiscent of the Ada Lovelace architecture. Details such as the GPU’s configuration reveal that it includes 6 Texture Processing Clusters (TPC), 2 Streaming Multiprocessors (SM) per TPC, and a total of 1536 CUDA Cores. This configuration mirrors designs typically found in mid-range and mobile models within the Turing and Ampere series.

Though these specifications offer a glimpse into the potential capabilities of the Nintendo Switch 2, making a direct comparison to existing PC hardware remains challenging. The true performance metrics will only be clarified following the console’s release.

Launch Date and Further Information

Enthusiasts can look forward to the official launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5th, bringing with it the promise of enhanced gaming experiences.
