Nintendo Closes Down Live-Action Fan Film Based on Zelda

The fan-driven live-action film Lost in Hyrule, inspired by the popular Legend of Zelda franchise, has been terminated by Nintendo just days after initiating its Kickstarter campaign. This cancellation comes in light of Nintendo’s and Sony’s announcement regarding an official adaptation directed by Wes Ball, renowned for his work on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Across the years, numerous creative fans have endeavored to visualize Hyrule through various unauthorized projects, including a notable animated feature inspired by the style of Studio Ghibli.

Lost in Hyrule aimed to serve as a compelling narrative set after the events of Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask. The storyline proposed an “untold conclusion to the Hero of Time’s saga, ”featuring Chris Carpenter as Link and Avi Lake, known for her role in A Series of Unfortunate Events, as Princess Zelda, described as pivotal to the film’s plot. The creators set an ambitious Kickstarter goal of $30, 000, intending to commence filming by April with the goal of a Fall 2025 release.

Unfortunately, the dream of bringing this fan project to life has been dashed. In a recent update on the film’s Kickstarter page, producer Dio Traverso announced the project’s cancellation due to Nintendo’s intervention. Acknowledging the inherent risk of such endeavors, Traverso expressed gratitude to backers and noted that since the campaign was terminated early, no funds had been collected. Additionally, Nintendo Life reached out to director Chris Carpenter for his perspective on this development.

Official Zelda Movie in Development

Nintendo is currently deep into production of a legitimate Legend of Zelda film, in collaboration with Sony, which is being helmed by director Wes Ball. Esteemed producer Shigeru Miyamoto, who created the Zelda franchise, and acclaimed producer Avi Arad—famous for his work on several blockbuster Marvel adaptations—are among those behind the project. Specific details concerning the movie remain scarce at this time.

Meanwhile, the franchise continues to thrive, bolstered by the phenomenal success of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which has shattered sales records and captivated fans since its debut on the Nintendo Switch in 2023. Speculations abound regarding a potential remake of an earlier game for the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2; however, these remain unverified as of now.
