The Meta Quest series of virtual reality headsets developed by Meta is set to expand with new hardware. Recent rumors and leaks suggest that a new variant of the Quest 3, designed to offer a premium VR experience at a significantly lower cost, is on the horizon.

Leaked marketing materials have confirmed that this upcoming headset will be named the Meta Quest 3s. The standalone device is set to replace the older Quest 2 model that Meta continues to sell alongside the Quest 3. Although the Quest 3s features the same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset as the Quest 3, its pricing has been reduced by utilizing an older lens design and potentially a slightly smaller battery compared to the latest hardware.

In addition to its standalone capabilities, the Quest 3s will also support PC VR software and games via Meta’s Link cable or the wireless Air Link option.

Notable data miner and leaker billbil-kun has provided additional insights regarding this highly anticipated headset.

The Quest 3s will reportedly launch with two storage variants. According to billbil-kun, the 128GB version will be priced at $299.99/€329.99/£289.99. In comparison, the Meta Quest 3 starts at $499 for the 128GB model.

Furthermore, a 256GB version of the Quest 3s is expected to be available, with a launch price of $399.99/€439.99/£379.99. While this is more expensive than the 128GB model, it still offers significant savings compared to the Quest 3’s pricier 512GB variant, which retails at $649.99.

It remains uncertain whether the Touch Plus controllers will be included in the package, as there are discussions about Meta potentially focusing on Hand Tracking as the primary control mechanism for this device.

According to the leaker, the Quest 3s is expected to be officially announced during the Meta Connect 2024 keynote, which will take place today, September 25. The event can be viewed on the Meta for Developers page on Facebook starting at 10 am PT/1 pm ET. Additionally, it can be experienced in virtual reality through the Meta Horizon app on Quest headsets.
