The Daily Grind: Have you ever tried to explain MMORPGs to people who don’t play them?
When I was younger, at one point I was trying to explain some guild drama that was unfolding in World of Warcraft to my mother. Now, my mother has never been particularly interested in the nonsense that comes out of my mouth (and I’m self-reporting here; I know what I’m like), but fam, this was bad. This was the sort of story where I could tell pretty early that she had tuned me out to the degree you usually tune out a rambling grandparent story. And considering I do not remember the actual story, she was right to do so.
Now, I have subsequently gotten better about explaining things to other people, including the games I am playing, but that always stands out in my mind as a peak of making a mistake in terms of trying to explain what I was doing. In hindsight, just saying “I’m playing my game” would have been a smarter decision. So have you ever tried to explain MMORPGs to people who don’t play them? Has it gone all right, or hilariously poorly?
Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
