The Daily Grind: Should extreme fall damage kill you in MMORPGs?

A while back, I was watching a New World video during which the devs were discussing pits and pit mechanics in PvP. Around 11:35 in, one of the PvP devs gets a twinkle in his eye and suggests that he misses when fall damage would kill players. The visceral reaction from the other three devs is actually pretty funny. “It takes all kinds,” Katy Kaszynski says, laughing, clearly shutting down the idea of bringing it back.
Honestly, I hadn’t realized New World didn’t have deadly fall damage; I guess I forgot. So many MMORPGs have it that I always assume it’s baked in, whether we’re talking about falling from the treetops of Kelethin or plunging off Weathertop. It just makes logical sense, unless you’re in a superhero MMORPG, maybe.
What do you guys think – should extreme fall damage kill you in MMORPGs? Or do you think just slowing you down or breaking a leg (or your pony’s leg) should be sufficient penalty for leaping off a chasm?
Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
