The Daily Grind: When did you first start paying attention to MMORPGs?

Memory is fickle beast, and when I try to think back to when I first started becoming aware that MMORPGs were a thing, it’s a bit fuzzy. I certainly know about online roleplaying from bulletin board systems in the early ’90s, but mainline MMOs only pushed into my sphere of knowledge when I had friends who got hooked on EverQuest around 2000 and tried — unsuccessfully! — to draw me in as well.
What about you? When did you first start paying attention to MMORPGs, and was there a particular game that drew your attention?
