The other day I was chain-running a series of timewalking dungeons in World of Warcraft and amusing myself by comparing the different Wrath of the Lich King instance designs. Some of them were a bit of a slog to get through with too many trash pulls, while others were quick romps through fun set pieces.

Dungeons are meant to be replayed, and as such, they should be at least a little interesting on the 20th run as they were on the first. So what elements make up for a highly replayable MMO instance? Is it the element of chance? Clever scripting? Gorgeous areas that invite rubbernecking? The perfect balance of trash-to-boss fights? Ease of navigation? Multiple paths?

What do you think? What elements come together to make a dungeon that you don’t mind seeing when it pops up on the queue?
