Not everyone agrees with me, but I don’t think there are any valuable MMO franchises out there. There was a time when that wasn’t true, of course; there were times when a new EverQuest title or a new Asheron’s Call or a new Lineage would excite people. But I think that time has passed. While there are definitely franchises that have MMOs, those are franchises that largely exist outside of them and have a breadth of single-player games to get people excited; theoretically at some point we’ll get The Elder Scrolls VI instead of Skyrim re-releases, for example.

But I also recognize that not only is this opinion not shared by everyone, it requires splitting some hairs; after all, World of Warcraft might not be an MMO franchise by my definition, but it has been only an MMO franchise for a couple of decades now. And hey, maybe you think that I’m wrong and there is still a general audience that would be fascinated by the promise of another crack at Ultima Online 2. So what MMO franchises would you consider valuable?
